has anyone ever used a blacklite lightbulb in there homemade bator? not sure if the heat output is the same as a bulb of equivalent wattage? dont want to risk the eggs already there to check....

I used one. I think the heat output is about the same. I set up my incubator with the black light (25W) and ran it for about 3 days to stabilize temps before I added eggs. Had a good hatch with it. I have now switched to another heat source but not because I was unhappy with the light itself - just the amount of room it took up. I had to put a screen around it so that newly hatched chicks didn't run into it and burn themselves, and that also took away space.

I have used a black light bulb for the last 2 hatches and I like them much better. The heat out put is about the same and they have more of a natural day and night cycle. No more loud parties in the brooder at 2 am in the morning lol.

We had an unexpected cold snap and I rigged up a a small computer fan under the shade that rests on the hardware cloth of the brooder lid. It works great recycles all that wasted heat that usually rises.
