We order ten pullets, as we did not want roos, but our friends seem covinced that two of our babies are roos. Now I am a first time chicken moma myself, but they are only 2 1/2 weeks old. Could you tell that soon? And has anyone ever order pullets only and some how ended up with a roo?

It does happen, yes. There isn't a hatchery out there that guarantees sexing 100%.

As far as telling if you have any little cockerels in the bunch or not goes, if you see any pink/red in the combs and wattles, you have a cockerel. The pullets combs and wattles will not get red until they reach point of lay.

Hope that helps!

Post some pictures in the breed/sex section. There are lots of people on here who can help. Hatchery sexing is usually 90% correct but.............

Don't panic- there was a time I was convinced every pullet I had was a rooster!!! Time will tell. I ordered 24 and got 24 pullets from McMurray. Good luck!

Yep. Every order I've ever made had at least one cockbird in it. Except the one time I specifically wanted some males then I got twenty eight pullets.

We ordered from Randell Burkey and all are healthy and active biggest problem so far is we have one with crooked toes. "She" is one of the ones they are saying is a roo. I love her we are very attached to all of them and I would hate to have to part with any of them. We live in town and while it is not illegal to have one we don't want have problems with the neighbors(well one in particular). Our friends are very sweet and want to help, they have 25 hens that are about a year old now. They are saying that because these two are feathering slower than the rest its most likley there roos. There behavior and size is the same as the others and no comb or wattle difference to me. I will post some pics in just a bit to see what you guys think. I figured two and a half weeks would still be a bit early to tell even if they were, but the others have had tail feathers much sooner. Oh well I guess only time will tell. Thanks guys!

I wouldn't worry to much about the feathering end of things. That is not an accurate way to tell a cockerel from a pullet.

I hatched out two batches of lavender Orpingtons last year and got 3 cockerels from the bunch and several pullets. All of them feathered in at the same rate except for one of the cockerels. Just one! See what I'm saying?

Let the chicks grow out a bit more. Usually you will know for sure by the time they are 6 wks. old who is a cockerel and who is not. Give it a bit more time before you worry to much.

We got some EE chicks from the feed store and they were all supposed to be pullets but I'm pretty sure two are roos. Their combs are much pinker than everyone else's. We bought 30 of them. So, that's 93% accurate. Most hatcheries guarantee 95% I think. But then again we bought 5 that were supposed to be white rocks and they were ALL cornish crosses. So, that 0% breed guarantee.

I ordered from cackle hatchery. I ordered 5 PULLETS and 2 out of the 5 were roos. I was so mad

Picked up 4 last year from the feed store and all were pullets. This year I got 8 and I'm pretty sure that 1 is a roo and maybe another. I did a great job picking them

. Maybe next time I should not pick the ones standing on the feeder and not afraid of anything.
