I've decided to try a gamebird feed called Black Rooster as a scratch, in very limited amounts. I wanted to get away from straight "chops" cracked corn, because my adult brahmas were getting a bit on the fat side.

Here's the ingredients of the Black Rooster:

Corn, Grain Sorghum, Oats, Wheat, Wheat Middlings, Dehydrated Alfalfa
Meal, Dried Whey, Dried Skimmed Milk, Casein, Yeast Culture, Fish
Meal, Cane Molasses, Animal Fat, Calcium Carbonate, Defluorinated
Phosphate, Vitamin A Supplement, D-Activated Animal Sterol (Source of
Vitamin D3), Vitamin E Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin,
Vitamin B12, Riboflavin Supplement, Choline Chloride, Manganese
Sulfate, Iron Oxide, Zinc Oxide, Ferrous Carbonate, Ferrous Sulfate,
Copper Oxide, Magnesium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate, Zinc Sulfate, DAlphatocoporal
Acetate, Soybean Meal, Wheat Bran, Rice Mill By-
Product, Vitamin A Palmitate, Popcorn, Salt and Black Oil Sunflower.

Is this okay to use as their daily evening treat? Perhaps a total of 3 cups for 34 birds?

Will they just eat plain BOSS?

What is the protein of the black rooster?

Oops, forgot that part. It is 13% protein.

They like BOSS, but it is difficult to find around here. Really I'd have to go to Atwoods (an hour away) or buy it at walmart and the walmart stuff seems old. [IMG]

Well the protein is better than just corn.

Personally I am not a corn fan and think atleast my birds get enough in their prepared feed, infact birds who are raised here generally will not eat dried corn but love fresh/frozen/or on the cob. I mix their scratch - BOSS, safflower seeds, wheat and oats - sometimes millet.

I think your birds will love it.

The walmart boss - have you tried sprouting it? If it sprouts it is still nutritious.

    gritsar,

That feed mix [Black Rooster] would be far better for them than just one or two grains as a scratch.
From what I can see it looks to be a "conditioner feed", is it for Game Birds or Gamefowl?
If I was you I would use it and depending on the protein percentage of you "regular" feed you could feed up to 20% of the Black Rooster to 80% of there regular feed.

Quote:Chris, thanks so much. The bag and the company's website says that it is gamebird feed. They really seem to enjoy it, but I didn't want to overdo it. Now I know that they can have a bit more. My layer feed is 16%. I would like to feed 18% but can't find it around here.
