Anyone fluent in Chicken-Speak? What are my birds saying??

Ha ha, I really like how articulate you are in chicken speak, LOL! I'm definetly no expert but sounds like one of two things that I recognize. First, as everyone is saying, it could be auditions for The Egg Dance. Second (though less likely given the circumstantial evidence) this is the song of a startled chicken (usually by preditors) but then, if a large white egg fell out of me I'd be pretty startled too

so they could be interconnected lol. Just my speculation.

For a better interpretation, however, Gail Damerow recently published an extensive article in Backyard Poultry (the edition featuring naked necks) about Chicken Speak.

cool! Thanks all

It sounds like Egg Song it is. I, too, thought predator at first, but nothing was in the coop (I did a thorough check) and Dorothy came out fine and joined us and when she started up again, she was not far from where I was standing and I looked and looked for a predator but same nothing. My roo just started the "hawk!" call a few days ago, too. Right now it sounds just like the sound "Predator" (from the movies) makes. LOL! I wish I could write that one out for you all, but I couldn't even begin to think of how to do it! It took me a few times to realize that he meant "hawk," but I finally noticed he was usually looking up when he did it and now he's doing it for hawks, airplanes (the most common), blue jays, swallows, killdeer, and a few things I can't see

I'll post on here if I do find an egg anytime soon. Thanks to everyone for all the replies!

My girl did the same thing awhile back, I got my camera ready an everything. I thought for sure I had an egg! I guess she was practicing but about a week later sure enough there was an egg!!!!!

I like how you spelled how she sounded. I was going to ask the same question too but wasn't sure how to write it.

Robin'sBrood :

EGG SONG! All 3 of my laying girls do it... hope to hear it from my teenage girls soon. My roo usually joins in with the singing too.

LOL You're hoping your teenage daughters will start laying eggs soon?!?!? Ok, I know that's not what you meant but it's what my brain interpreted before I had time to think about it... Thanks for the laugh!

Mine make that noise when they are going to or have laid a egg or they see something that looks "dangerous" like sparrows and inocent rabbits (my roosters love harrassing the poor rabbits)
