Anyone for veri- vremi- Worm-farming?

I'm thinking about doing some worm farming, mostly to enhance my garden. I have PLENTY of rabbit-, pig-, chicken-, duck-, and turkey- poop! I've never done it before though, so any experienced ones who want to offer advice, I'd surely appreciate it!

You really should do a BYC search for vermicomposting or worm farming, there is a wealth of great info already posted in many previous threads here. Good luck.

We have a worm bin. It's very easy to get going. Ours is going like gangbusters with very little effort on our part. Scrambled Egg gave some good advice. There have been a few threads on here about vermicomposting. Good luck!

I am wanting to have a worm farm as well. If I can ever sell my house, we are moving to another piece of property that we have, and build a house. That is where I would like to have the worm farm. I think they are so cool!

I have mine in the house, right next to my desk here. They are super easy to keep and dont smell at all. When I first told hubby that I was going to keep worms(and in the house) he told me he didnt want them "stinking up the place." But now when his friends come over he brings them in here to show them off.

Here is how it normally goes: "I bet you'll never guess whats in here..nope WORMS!! You didnt even smell them did you?"

I've started collecting "worm food" at work, Coffee grounds and peels and things. As for my "start-up" worms, I'm going to get some from the bait shop this Thursday. They sell red worms and night crawlers. I'm thinking the red worms will be best. And my rabbits and chickens are contributing their share nicely. I should have some fat, happy worms in no time!

Red worms would be fine. Your not talking about putting the rabbit and chicken poop IN the worm bin are you? That would cook your worms.

Gonna let it be in the composter for a while first to break down a bit. I don't want my worms cooked! The ammonia levels need to go down first!(In the poop, I mean)

I started with composted horse manure. vegatable scraps leaves and more leaves.


there is a place you can get like 5K worth of red worms, but I am not in a hurry so I went to the local bait shop and got two containers of bait (red worms) I dumped them both out onto the pile (I have an upturned dead fridge with the doors off) and went back the next day to see if anyone lived. only one didnt make it. So I am just letting them party for a few months and will go back and see what I have.

I've been thinking about doing this as well. It'd be great for out garden and I know the birds would enjoy them too.
