Hi Brittany, I live in Joliet, IL (by the Theodore Marsh). My wife and I were think of getting some chickens too. Just getting into this. So, they definitely came back and said "OK"?

Crest hill is a different village than Joliet and therefore has different guidelines. Your best bet is to call the village and ask like I did. I am fairly certain that I've heard they are not okay in Joliet.

Okay, IronCabbage. I don't know if you called your village or not, but looking on-line their codes are the exact same as Crest Hill's so really I don't see why you would have a problem. I know people on here have said that they aren't legal in Joliet, but I was told the same thing in Crest Hill and then the woman wrote back about a week later and said she had been mistaken and so long as my yard is fenced or they are in a coop 24/7 and don't poop on other people's property then there is no problem with owning them. Again, though, like I said, make sure you call them to double check for yourself and if they say it's kosher get it in writing like I did in case a neighbor or someone has an issue or a problem arises so you can prove that you were told it was okay. Keep me posted! : )

Good! I sure as all H-E-double-hockey-sticks didn't want to hear any kind of Big Brother mess going on this close to home, neighbor! It's YOUR business who and/or what poops on your property, seeing as you have to do the scooping! I don't know about you, but I moved the the Southland to escape the State of Chicago and that kind of crud needs nipped in the bud...let the yuppies go back to the Gold Coast if they don't like it!

I haven't had a chance to call Joliet yet. I am right on the border with Crest Hill, so their regulations are good to know as well. I'm still trying to see if there's budget for the cooSUBMITp for this year.

Thanks for the responses.

Let me know how it goes with Joliet. I'm thinking of setting up over the summer and ordering backyard chickens next year. Who did you call at the city?

I just sent an email to the general city email. She said she spoke with the building dept and that is who gave the go ahead. Thr police and animal control have been bere numerous times since then about my neighbors dog being abused and neither ared. In fact one officer and animal control even held em lol
