Anyone from Kansas

We're in Wichita. Our boys have decided they want chickens so we googled and found this great site. Any restrictions in Wichita? We have decided that we want laying hens, no roosters for now. Now, on to build the coop and get the chicks.

Hi Kansans! Do you mind if a Missourian joins in?? I'm only about 50 miles from Kansas City. Its tough finding folks close to you. If anybody knows of someone with BLRW splash variety, I'm in the market!

Terri.

I am in the central part. You are lucky to have 'kids' that do the work for you. Do they set whenever you put eggs out in a nest? I had a SLW that set several times last year but only where and when she wanted and don't even think about trying to move her.

They do have a mind of there own as far as when they are broody, but once they get in the nest its all over. I have never seen her leave the nest but I know she does. The Penciled Cochin is sitting right now and at times the silver laced cochin will sit on top of her as they both like the same nest. It is very odd but interesting. I also have a batch of Cuckoo eggs in my incubator set to hatch the week of christmas. I wanted to have a little excitement around the house during that time of the year. I keep the incubator in my wifes walk in pantry. I had it up and running before she could throw a fit. I will post pics as they hopefully hatch.

But then hubby hasn't said too much about the quail on the far side of a kitchen table in a brooder type container. (or the extras that wouldn't fit there on the washing machine :rolleyes

He did say something about shrinking the table a while back though!!

Good luck on the hatch! They keep the cabin fever down and let us know spring will come again.

I live in Kansas city but will be moving my family to fulton Kansas in 2 months. I have some experience in organic vegetables and worked for Paul Conway of Conway's organics for 4 years in Leavenworth. We are looking at integrating Black Australorps into our first year. I have also thought about purchasing some Guineas to see if they will keep pest down in organic vegetables. It would be nice to find a reputable breader in the area. If anyone knows of one I would be interested in hearing about it.
