Anyone going to have eggs hatch in novemeber?

I'll probably be setting a few dozen mixed eggs Friday morning. The two roos are a Langshan and an EE. The hens are Welsummer, Cuckoo Marans, Turken, Cochin X, Leghorn X, Langshan and EE. Hhhmmm, I guess there is a possibility of some purebred Langshans! I also plan on picking up some pretty blue purebred (hopefully) Ameraucana eggs Friday morning. Its a 2.5 hour round trip so they BETTER be some quality eggs lol.

Our eggs are tracking for arrival tomorrow morning with placement in the incubator tomorrow night(after they've settled). Which would give us a hatch date of...11/29-ish(turkey day chicks!!)

We purchased the "Hatching eggs-Our best standards" from MPC. It can include basically ANYTHING...so it will be a guessing game! My daughter was SO torn on which eggs to pick that this seemed like the best way to go without spending a small fortune for eggs after spending close to $500 on day olds for the same project(she wanted the minimum number(3) of everything-LOL). Our existing flock is mixed(barred rock, production reds, and EEs with a Barred Rock roo and I didnt really want mixed breed babies)

We are using a borrowed hovabator, but if all goes well, we MAY purchase our own...I will likely be asking for recommendations later, Im sure I will find it just as addicting as raising day-olds to add to our flock ;-) Just feel bad for my husband, he has to keep adding on to the chicken coop :-) Im just lucky he is indulgent...last year I ordered 6 EEs and 2 silkies, feed store left a message that they had my 8chicks. I called back before listening to the message, the relayed that they had my NINE chicks. We arrived 20minutes later to pick them up...I had TEN in my box ;-) So I guess even the feed store knows what to do with the "extras"-LOL

Nope don't worry, this is also my first hatch... I am so clueless that I tried to candle them today (after only 3 days) decided that nothing is happening and cracked one open!!! Imagine my shock and horror, and sadness when I saw a perfectly developing tiny little embryo with lots of red veins going into the yolk.. And I just killed it.

But at least I know they're okay... Or maybe the one I cracked open was the okay one... We'll have to see in 18 more days....
 
Hey ya'll! The kids and I have 6 RIR eggs due to hatch Friday Nov 9th!!! We can hear scratching in the eggs. I think at least 5 will hatch as those are the ones we can hear noises from. With the 1 egg I believe stopped developing during the 2nd week the shell seemed to be thinner with more striations when candled but it's still under the heat just in case. I didn't really expect anything to hatch because we did the old fashioned box with a thermometer and heat lamp with consistant turning every day til yesterday. Hearing them tells us the old ways can be improved upon but never erased:P

Not just for you but all first timers, It's hard for experienced people to tell at day 3 if anything is going on. I suggest waiting til day 10 before removing any egg. if there is one you think might be good but can't see in leave it til day 18. candle before lock down. remove anyone that you know for sure isn't good. anything questionable leave in. I"ve had eggs that I saw nothing in til day 18 then it was just veins i could see. Hatched out to be light yellow chicks from a brown egg. :)
Typically you'll end up with more then one good egg if on day 3 you have development. Try to look at it as a learning experience. Now you know what a chick embryo looks like.
 
Esti checking was fine but like the previous poster. It is good to check at 7-10 days that's when veins should be easy to see and you should see an air pocket forming at one end. I find that I hatch alot of dark eggs and by day 15 I can't see anything but the air pocket.

I don't throw them out unless I can clearly see a blood ring or they smell. I've had eggs that I was sure were duds end up hatching so I give them til day 23 in general.

Sounds like your temp spike might not have hurt them. If they develop more you'll know that it is ok.

I just turned the eggs in my bator for the first time and set up my data sheet in excel where I will record my egg details. 35 out of the 61 shipped eggs that I have set have a detached air cell. I will be super interested to see what they look like when I candle! I'll try and hold off candling until day 5 probably.... hopefully by then I will be able to see something!

JenW - congratulation on your little ones. Puff is doing such a good job for a first time mum! You must be very proud!

Esta - Oh no! You candled way to soon. So sad for you that you cracked open the egg! Let's hope that the rest are all developing just as well as that one was and you can see a lot more next time you take a peek! Try not to candle too much though... it isn't very good to handle the eggs too much! and remember to have clean hands each time that you candle

Cknldy - The old fashioned method! I like that! Let's hope that your little ones hatch and have enough humidity so that they don't get stuck! Do you know what the humidity is in your room?
 
Day 7 on my 35 call duck eggs: my daughter and i candled the eggs .....34 outta 35 have veins developing...
