Anyone had a broken big toe before? I have a question...

I can help you out....I broke my big toe last summer. Black and blue for weeks! It took months to heal, my doctor said the only thing I could do is splint it to the next toe to help immobilize it...which for me, just made it harder to get around. After a couple of weeks, I didn't have to walk funny anymore to accomodate the toe.

Now, a year later, it's fine but I noticed it pops when I move it sideways and it doesn't have the flexibility like it use to. But I can still wear flip-flops!!

Hang in there.....never realized how important the big toe really is!

Uggggg.....How many toes HAVEN'T I broken????
Never went to the DR, but did buy a 'boot' to wear after the last incident in January. (Slipped off the 4-wheeler, last 3 toes bent back and broken.

) They still hurt to this day, and its been, what?, 7 months?

I can predict rain and snow with my knee and ankles, hot weather with my shoulder, when I'm going to get sick, with my back, and a dramatic weather change of any kind with my wrist. Wonder what my collar bone will be able to do????

No, but I broke one foot and sprained both ankles at the same time. (bah da boom!)

Oh wait, this isn't a competition....?

There are these nifty shoe/splint things with velcro closures that prevent your foot bones from bending while walking. I had one when I had a hairline fracture of my 3rd metatarsal once, worked great, pain was alleviated immediately! Never got a cast

Medical supply houses probably sell them, otherwise your doc can get you one.

I dropped a 35lb weight plate on my big toe,on a concrete floor!

It broke the end bone in 6 places! They did an X-ray, yep it was broke, DUHHHH, taped it to my next toe and gave me crutches. That was 7 years ago and it still bothers me... try to wear proper shoes when you are able, hard floors really get it hurting (it will be awhile before you can put that bad boy in a shoe),- LOL. I could not even bear wind blowing on the tip of my toe at first, but it did take a long time for it to heal and the toenail to grow back(I lost that while on an endurance ride w/my horse,)

AHHHH, haha. P.S broken toes are like smack magnents, everything wants to smack into it -keep everything at a distance.......

I don't know, but if it is, I think you won.

I discovered how much I enjoy my big toe when my lovely not-so-little warmblood mare decided to crush my right one (she wasn't too happy that I was trying to clip her ears. Or something else equally as tragic. I forget

). Popped the whole toenail off, right out of the nail bed, and split the fleshy underside right open. I don't know if it was actually broken or not, but it sure did hurt like h*ll and, you know, it takes a long time for a whole toenail to grow back!

Best wishes for speedy healing of your poor big toe!!

Having ignored my broken toe two years ago, I can say that for me, getting a funny black stiff shoe would have been smart.

I had my joint cut out as arthritis ruined the joint ( I am 42 and no arthritis elsewhere, in my family either) and had the whole thing screwed together to fuse- took ALL SUMMER in the black boot, and now the screw was taken out, for another week of sitting. Take care of things when they are small and easy is the lesson I learned. Good luck!

broke the toe next to big toe last October <confirmed by xray>. They gave me one of those hard soled shoe/boots to wear. After 4 days of that I went to a pair of shoes I had that did not hurt. When I talked to the call back nurse (checks to see if things are ok) she asked me why I wasn't using the "boot". I told it made me sore in other places like hip and knee, the shoe I wore hurt less in those areas ans supported the foot fine.

The toe still does not bend right but oh well.

Long, long ago I am sure I broke my big toe <not confirmed, just hurt!!!>, actually my now DH broke it when we were tickle fighting in my parent's kitchen, but that is another story. I justl limped around on that one - why ask if it is broken? They can't do anything - same thing when I broke a rib coughing <agian, not medically confirmed, why ask when you know they can't fix it!> - what can they do, I just avoided hugs - except when Edith gave me a hug after church that one day, I was nearly in tears and she didn't know what she had done - I didn't see it coming and couldn't turn sideways quick enough!

I always tell folks that I have never had a cast - anything I break can't be casted - head, toe, rib, toe again... LOL

Take care of the toe - it takes weeks to feel better...

Oh, must add that I could not put on a solid closed toe shoe, I wore a leather semi closed sandle from the Payless Shoe Store - sole was a firm leather, but top was a semi open leather weave - just recently got rid of them because of dog issue....<sigh>
