Anyone had a broken big toe before? I have a question...

Would you like to see a pic of what a broken toe looks like after a couple of years? I broke mine and did nothing about it. It feels fine, I just can't bend it like the other one though. It's uglier but other then that, it's fine. I can take a pic of it for you if you are THAT curious hehaha.

my boyfriend had an accident on his motorcycle on his way to my house, he broke his toe and probably had a fracture on the top of his foot and refused to go to the hosp. He can now predict snow...

Nope, that's just fine. I can use my imagination!

I do appreciate all the responses though. I'll just keep ignoring it, keep it elevated when I can and pray that I can't predict the snow in the future. (I can already do that with my collarbone which I broke in three places years ago.

I broke my big toe once. The DR taped it (splint) and advised elevation and ice periodically. About every hour or two. Tylenol for the discomfort/swelling. Unless it is bad enough that they need to set it (IE bone sticking out) they really only try to support it so that you are not bumping it around and causing yourself more pain. A popcicle stick and some tape, a stiff pair of thongs (flip flops) and some tape plus ice and elevation should eep you comfortable enough until it has a chance to heal. If you think it may be more serious than that I would recommend at least getting an exray though.

Nurse Julie says buddy tape it to the next toe for splinting and immobilization. Ibuprofen for pain, elevate for the swelling. I have broken my toe (same one!) countless times....hurts a lot, turns black, swells up, etc. Turns out fine, though. The buddy taping helps keep it from splaying when you walk. Sorry bout the toe!

I'm a PT. If you are going to buddy tape, make sure that the toe is straight and not tilted toward the next toe. You may need to roll some gauze and put it between the toes to keep them straight. The stiff shoe (rocker shoe) can probably be purchased at a pharmacy. With most toes you do nothing, but the big toe is crucial to proper walking. If you have any questions about the alignment, get it checked out. It could save you a lot of pain and a possible need to re-break later.

Get an x-ray.

I broke off a little piece of my right big toe and it had to be surgically placed back on with some screws. You don't want little pieces of bone floating around in your foot for the rest of your life...

I would definitely go with 2manyhats' advice ...I've broken toes, but not the big one, fortunately. I still went to my doc and walked with a cane and the rocker shoe ..just to be on the safe side... and I like to do MY OWN chores and stuff, too

Good Luck!

I agree about big toes being crucial. Get it checked out, and let the Dr. show you how to properly splint it. You won't be helping yourself if you buddy tape it crooked. But properly buddy taped or otherwise splinted - it will feel a LOT better.

My DH broke his big toe and heman wouldn't go to the doctor. He regrets it now as it did not heal correctly. So now his toe is crooked and hurts every time it rains. Never mind getting a pair of shoes that fit right . be careful that it is straight. His looked straight at first then started turning at an angle.
