Anyone had problems with vaccinating their children?

My brother's wife is an ER tech and when we were visiting last week she called and asked if my kids were up-to-date on their shots because they had a confirmed case of mumps at the hospital. She said that's the 2nd case of mumps she's seen in the past year and she's seen 3 cases of Scarlet Fever. All these diseases we thought we were done with are still around! Scary stuff! The little girl with the mumps was 8 years old and they're not sure how badly she'll be affected - she might go deaf or she might be sterile for the rest of her life.

One of my friends' kids had a bad reaction to shots and she chose to have the shots given one at a time on a delayed schedule until he got them all.

They've taken thimerisol out of kids' vaccines years ago (the flu shot may still have thimerisol) but you could double-check with your doctor if you're worried.

My son is now a freshman and the new "State Law" indicates that he may not return to school next year unless he has MORE shots. He was already current with what he had. The Government is ordering that our children be vaccinated again or will no longer be allowed in public school. I will home school before he will be vaccinated again.

I also think you have terms mixed up. Roseola is completely unrelated to MMR, and there is no vaccine for it; virtually all young children get this very mild disease. Often the only symptom is the rash. The MMR vaccine is a live vaccine, so there is a chance of contracting the illnesses it vaccinates against. Measles is rubeola; German measles is rubella. It is likely that it is one of these that your son contracted. In general measles tends to be a much more severe illness than German measles; however German measles are very likely to cause miscarriage or deformities in the fetus of a pregnant woman who contracts the disease.

I would be LIVID if a school nurse vaccinated my child for ANYTHING without my permission. Goodness knows when I choose to vacinate my child at his DOCTOR's office, I must SIGN a consent form for EACH vaccine. If three vaccinations are given on the same day, I must sign THREE consent forms that specify the exact vaccine, the manufacturer and specific batch of vaccine, an acknowledgement of common side effects and serious side effects.

Rubeola. I have been saying it wrong for 16 years.

I have cleaned this up. Any further posting of 'you’re wrong, I'm right' or 'you have less intelligence than me if you believe that' and someone will have some time off to contemplate how wrong it is to not follow our rules here. My children, when I have them, will have their vaccinations. By me choosing to vaccinate, I am helping my community to maintain a low level of disease outbreak thanks to herd immunity. Hopefully by my child being vaccinated, some other child will be spared a deadly disease.

I personally have had mumps THREE times (I remember two of them--kindergarten and 3rd grade; the first time was when I was about 2), without complications any of those times. Sterility with mumps is associated with teenage and older boys (a reason that parents used to TRY to expose their kids to mumps when they were small), not with girls.
