Hatch is over. I still have some eggs sitting in the bator but only because I have one chick that needs to be in the incubator for another day or so.
Totals are:
5 Giant Cochins (out of 26 shipped and 23 started - 16 made it to lockdown) 21% hatch rate
6 Easter Egger (out of 7 picked up in backyard) 86% hatch rate
12 Blue Marans (out of 20 shipped and 18 started - 18 made it to lockdown) 67% hatch rate
This was an interesting hatch. The cochin eggs were shipped with what I thought was borderline poor packaging. Also, they were advertised as the ones left over from the days shipment (which means they were most likely not the best eggs seller had). I won't ever buy a "bargain assortment" again. The hatch rate was poor and overall they were more expensive per bird than if I had bought a smaller and better packed bunch of eggs.
Marans eggs were large, dark and well formed and were packed great.
And, of course, my own eggs did great . My roo is a busy boy and I am sure his offspring will grow up to be healthy and beautiful.
This was my first hatch with my new Sportsman. I did much better than with my LG but I still have a ways to go. I am glad I got a few Cochin and am very pleased with the Marans. Next I think I am going to try guinea eggs - from my own birds. I hear those are easy to hatch and sell.
