I tried to candle this afternoon to show the chicks to a friend but it was too bright. I'm going to have to put them in order of best activity too, so next time maybe I'll have better luck. Can't wait for dark...

Hey KZ, I don't think you can harm your hatch rate by candling, unless you use a hot incandescent light and cook the eggs with it. I actually find it very calming to candle. (maybe that's a symptom of the addiction...

) I can reassure myself that the chicks are alive and the incubator is doing it's job. I feel less hatching stress and more excitement for hatch day. Of course, it's hard to make myself stop.... Oh, somebody tell me where the nearest 12 step program is....

when i just candled again tonight i did see a blood ring but it doesn't smell so i may give it another couple days. most of mine look good but some are so dark it is hard to see even with a real candler. some also look more developed than others so i may have some quitters but i will check in another couple of days. oh the waiting... sigh

We're into Day 12 now with my two bators. I recandled the ones in the hand turned one and sadly, had to remove another porcelain D'Anver egg.

Tried to take a pic of it for you--it's just two spots, no more veins, sort of murky, vastly different from the last two porcelains and the mille fleur D'Anvers, a quitter:

A SLW egg has a floating bubble and looks like an expired peep, but I marked it and left it in the bator to recheck at a later time. Still have to recandle the eggs in the turner, but may wait a day or two. I'm down to 64 eggs now. As I toss quitters, I move eggs from the handturned batch into vacated spots on the turner so I have fewer to turn by hand, making the job easier.

Snazzy, sorry about the peep.

thanks speckledhen. i have an egg that looks a lot like the one you just posted. after taking one out too early i was hesitant to remove that one but i think it is a quitter. i also have one with a blood ring (i think). now i'm questioning everything. gah!

The pic isn't great but it's just two spots and no veins so by Day 12, that isn't right at all, especially when you compare it with the others. Some are not so easy to judge, though, not till later.
