Anyone hatching Dec 14th? Looking for hatching buddies for 1st hatch!

Hi Rin, I just wanted to add that your temps really aren't that terrible. The chick's normal temp is 103 anyway, so, you didn't cook them at that temp. My last hatch the temps ranged from 97 to 102 every half hour and I still had a 25% hatch rate. Hang in there.

As far as he 2 that seem less developed than the others, only time will tell, but you can give them extra time if they don't hatch with the others.

Thank you and everyone, I feel tons better but still refuse to get my hopes too high just in case they break my heart. Should I hear chirping on the hatch day or at any time before that? The fact they're silent and completely still also keeps me in check in the meantime

Well I haven't written since Nov 29th (pg 10) but I currently have some good new & bad...good news- I candled my 13 eggs and all but 1 are fertile and growing well. The bad news - I lost another one of my older girls, a blk giant this weekend. She was only 2 1/2 yrs old but we're having nasty cold weather so I not sure if that had any effect. I keep a well heated coop. I lost my white giant over a year ago with the same signs of labored breathing so I'm assuming it was something respiratory related.

I've heard chicken are very susceptible to pneumonia.
She was not alone though, she died in my arms.

I've enjoy looking through all the pgs though since my last entry and seeing all the new babies they do lift your spirits. Mine should be hatching mid part of next week though!

It's been so long since I've written on BYC, I don't recognize any names anymore but I'm one of the oldies. I work full time but off today so more or less just writing my thoughts.

I have 15 still going of my original 30. I'm on day 12.

Every one I removed I cracked open and checked. The good news is I was 100% correct. A couple scrambled, several not fertilized and 2 blood rings (those 2 on day 11) The bad news is the blood rings were the ones I wiped off. They were covered in mud and poop though and smelled so bad I thought I had a rotten egg in there! I was more worried that they may contaminate the whole incubator though, so I wiped them with 99 degree water and hoped for the best. I wiped 5 and 2 quit after. Some of my air cells are funky shaped, but I'm not giving up on them.

I also have a set of 8 and another set of 17 in there. They went in this weekend, so I need to try and build an incubator to move those to while the first set are in lockdown.

How's everyone else doing?

Sorry about your hen MTtrout.

And sorry about your eggs Murano. Don't beat yourself up though. We can only do what we think is best. This is what I keep telling my girls during our first hatch. This "project" is not for us to see how incredible and perfect we are at hatching baby chicks. This project is for my girls to learn how incredible God created mama hens. They know exactly what temp to keep the eggs (without a thermometer) and when to turn the eggs (without a clock). The are perfect chick mamas without an instruction book!!

That being said, I am still obsessed with the temp/humidity etc. LOL! My sister, who I stated in an earlier post was recruited to turn my eggs on Saturday, is now having chicken dreams!! LOL! She made fun of me for obsessing about them, but I ask her to turn them one time for me and she was so freaked out that she had forgotten to turn an egg that she made two trips to my house instead of one on Saturday. LOL!! She said "That is a lot of pressure, what if I had done something wrong"?!?! I just laughed and said, "I guess you understand now??" She called me today and told me she was now dreaming about the eggs. She said I had asked her to egg-sit again, and on her watch the eggs started cracking and oozing stinky fluids. She said she was in a total panic!! LOL! That's what she gets for making fun of me!!!

Two more dayyyssssss (technically one in an hour) ... I'm going nuts over here. Keep thinking I hear chirping when I don't. Temp seems to be steadying and its supposed to get warm tomorrow (later today? Evil crickets chirping!) I'm hopping over to walmart in a few minutes to get a plastic tub and water bottle and gunna try and drill a hole or two in the tub to hook up the water bottle and set up their home. I WAS going to use the bath tub in the bathroom I NEVER use but realized with a hatch of at most 7 chicks - a bath tub might be way too big. I also couldn't figure out how I was going to set up my lamp in there. Plus the cat seems to be obsessed with that bathtub in particular likes to sit there and yowl for hours on end. I think he likes the acoustics for his singing. Also the place that sold suction-cuppy water bottles suddenly decided not to carry them anymore before I got one and now I can't find anyone who sells them. *shrug* :< Plastic bin should be better anyway. I'll get to move them around if they decide they want to be able to see me easier without having to mess with their environment too much. Though now I'm cutting it rather close. XD I'm just lucky they haven't decided to hatch early if they even do at all.

I can so relate! I hatched eggs in October. My DS was so excited about it that he found some online computer game that had to do with chicks. The computer is in the same room as the incubator was. So, he would go it and play this game, of course there was chirping. This was on day 20 of incubation. I kept running in to see if there were pips and just found him playing his game. LOL I've wised up this time and the incubator is in a different room.

Mtrout - Sorry about your hen

I went into lock down today, though I may have to add more water tomorrow. I only had 6 out of 20 that look like they might do anything. Hatch day should be Wednesday/Thursday.
