Anyone hatching Dec 14th? Looking for hatching buddies for 1st hatch!

Well, my 2 are doing great. Thanks Suechick for the advice! Yesterday they were finally running around they are eating great. I ended up putting a piece of shelf liner in the bottom of the brooder for them. I think that helped. I will take some more pics of them tonight.

Congrats on the pip 3CrazyGirlz, hopefully you will have fuzzy butts tonight. We will need pics of them!

The last one finally hatched at 3:30 this morning. Here is a picture of the happy family.

It is so exciting to see all the new chicks! Mine are at day 9. They are Marans eggs, so very dark. What I can see is the air sack in most of the eggs. I see no movement. Some I can see vanes. One I can see a clear line that runs completely around the egg, is that a blood ring? and if so should I get rid of that egg?

Also, I have been reading a lot about eggs exploding at day 14. What's that all about? My problem, (among others!) is that, If I can't see into the eggs, then I don't want to make a mistake and get rid of a good one. I figured I would wait it out until the end and see what happens. (unless there is a smell or something) As you can tell, I am running from behind, as I am new to this. I am reading everything I can get ahold of, but you guys are the best information! Please advise! Thanks!

I put 24 RIR/BRL crosss in the incubator back in nov. today I have 19 pretty fiesty chicks, all red ,except there are 2 that are solid black. will the black ones be roos since i'm thinking this has something to do with a sex linking I hope. Can anyone fill me in on the cross breeding of the Rhode island reds and the Brown leghorns, should be egg laying machines in a few months. this is my second time Incubating and I feel real lucky with that many Hatching.

Chicken chat - They are so cute.

Are they lavender somethings? Did you stay up until 3:30 to watch?!*!? Wow you are dedicated.

Imagesoart - at 9 days of incubation it is sometimes hard to make a decision about which eggs are good and which ones aren't with regular colored eggs. Marans are ridiculous! CrazyGirl found a really high powered led flashlight at WalMart that helped her see insider her Maran eggs. Her post is below.

Maybe you could get one and try that. Personally, I would hesitate to remove eggs so early. Pay attention to smells and look for abnormal shells, cracks etc. If you smell anything then you'll have to try to figure out which one (s) are bad, but hopefully you have a good source and won't need to worry. I'm no expert and I think there are other traits you can look for to help you decide if you have good eggs. Maybe someone else has some good advice...

3 cheers for CrazyGirlz pip! Come on out chickies come on!!

Wow that's a big bunch! I don't know anything about the genetics of the RIR/BRL cross, maybe you should ask on the "What breed is this" board. They know all kinds of stuff over there. I think most of us are fairly new to chickens here on this thread.

Thanks, Suechick. They are from my own flock of silkies. I have some red, white and partridge together. I needed some eventual friends for a lone chick that hatched 4 weeks ago from shipped eggs (my fault on that hatch, I had temp spikes in that room which I corrected this time around) The last one that was born was a refrigerated egg I threw in at the last minute. I didn't stay up the whole night, I kept setting my alarm clock every two hours because I was worried that it was taking it so long to zip but he's completly healthy, so I worried for nothing.

Better pics to come. This was taken with my phone, but I wanted to get it out.

Here is another pics of the little peeper. I have quit pacing so much. The kids are settled in watching a movie and I am listening to the sweet peep, peep, peep of our little chickie.
