I always check my turkey eggs on day 10

Do you sell your turkeys or do you butcher them? Do you sell to butcher? Just wondering if you know any of the laws here in Texas. My friend wants to offer fresh organic free range poultry and we were wondering what the laws were. I had the state come out the other day to inspect my chickens for my license. He was really nice and kept telling me what beautiful chickens they were! I asked him about selling eggs but I didn't think to ask about the meat!

we have heritage turkeys and just raise them for butchering ourselves... my understanding of Texas law for selling the meat is that we can sell the live birds .. but can "process them for free"... or "teach someone how to process" after we sell them the live bird. I've never sold any of ours. We have 20 some turkeys now.. and about 17 due to arrive in the spring plus whatever eggs we decide to hatch out. From all of those we'll end up keeping about 6 or so for breeders and the rest will go to freezer camp.

Muscovy ducks are a bit different.. when they are butchered (my understanding is) that you have to keep the pinioned wing or tattooed foot intact when the bird goes to freezer camp.. so you can prove it was a tame bird and not a feral one that you caught and killed.

just found these.. may help... or just add to the confusion:

I also found another forum where they discuss rabbits and say that rabbits are included as poultry in most states .. one of the quotes follows what I though to be true "in texas you can offer rabbit meat live and offer to process for no extra money to get around any usda laws".. would post the link but it's against forum rules.

Sorry to get things off topic... now back to your regularly scheduled program!

This is my very first turkey hatch but Indiana law is similar to Texas I think. I have to sell the live animal and deliver it to the processor ( they pay the processor), have them pick up the live animal or butcher for free or show them how. The key point is selling them the live animal. I refuse to hither for someone I don't know. Just saves my butt.

My Iowa Blue eggs went into lockdown today!
Yesterday I found my first Asil egg so hopefully I will be setting some of those by the end of the month.

My name is B&@$ and I am a hatchaholic.
