Anyone HATCHING?!?!? Newbie's and addicts WELCOME!!!! Hatch Calendar page 1!!!!

I was running around 40% humidity just in the room the incubator was in, so once I realized this, there was no need to add more moisture to the incubator other than the small amounts i did every little bit, then when lockdown came I added alot of water. I was under the impression that 40% is on the high end of what is ok for the first 18 days. 30-35% is ideal, then up it to 60-70% for lockdown. This is a learning experience, and try to look at it that way, once you figure out all the little things, it will probably be easy. I learned and read alot before trying this, and luckily my chicks cooperated with me.

I have some Serama's and a variety of frizzle, silkie, turken, and a couple of others incubating right now.
They are due to hatch February 17th. I am so excited. I plan to use a webcam to stream the hatching
process. I will post the link when I do.

Question, would it be okay to candle at day 5? Just wondering because I've heard of people doing it before and I don't know if I'll be able to wait till day 8(Well, I can wait I'm just excited to see if there's anything in those eggs

).

I just candled mine on day 7, and 37 out of 39 are showing development!!!

The earliest I suggest candling is day 5, but people do it earlier and still have good hatches, I just try not to touch them as much as possible so I don't spread germs as much. It is very hard though, lol

I guess I will candle on day 5. I wasn't going to do it any earlier than that, I also fear of harming the eggs if I touch them to much. I'm just very curious to see if I have anything developing this time.

Any first timer will try to candled them real soon ! I am one of them, but I was braved enough to will until the 7th day !. As long you can hold them carefully and quickly it should be fine to look at them !! Its fun to experiment !

Congrats!

For those who want to candle often but are afraid of damaging the eggs.... This is what I do:

I found a book light that is very small and LED for $1 at one of those dollar stores.
It looks like this-

I bend the neck of it so that I can just open the incubator a little bit to slide it in and put it to the tops of the eggs in the turner. It's not the best candler ever, but it works pretty darn good. I barely have to open the incubator and I don't touch the eggs. I can see in each egg well enough to tell if there are veins, bloodrings, or if it's clear. I don't take the eggs out to candle them really well until lockdown. That's when I toss all the bloodrings and clears.

What a great idea!!! I'm going to try and find me one of those today!! I don't candle too much, but I like the idea of not touching the eggs until lockdown. Thanks!
