Threw away one quitter, now we are down to 16 eggs! Lockdown is in egg-sactly a week.

I candled my Sizzle eggs, started with 7, tossed one a few days ago that was showing no development, but the 6 that are left are certainly movers and shakers!!

The flashlight I have is incredibly bright because I had purchased it for some BCM eggs I incubated prior to this, (I think it's 160 Lumens, the battery life is only an hour on it!) and this is my first time with light shelled eggs and I am just SO amazed at how much I can see inside those little eggs! Fingers crossed they all make it to lockdown!

Can't wait till I can candle my Splash Marans! I also put one of our little 'barnyard mutts' in with that one also, I believe it's going to be a Barred Rock/Silver Laced Wyandotte mix... I was just kind of curious to see how they turn out!

Way to go Tanichca and silkymom1986! Sounds you're both doing great!! I am always really hesitant to toss eggs unless I am 110% sure there is no hope also. Two of my Splash Marans eggs had hairline cracks, but I did my best to patch them and am hoping for the best, we'll see how they do.

Here's two little silkies that hatched on the 22nd

. They really stole my heart

I originally got the eggs for my best friends Grand Daughter but they were so destroyed that only these two made it to lockdown and actually hatched. I can't believe how soft they are!!!! Softer than a Momma Bunnies Fuzzy Tummy

When they first hatched and I put them into the brooder box the little partridge one had trouble standing and walking until I noticed that the little towel I had put in for them was a little slick for all the feathers she has on her 5 precious little toes

Once I changed the towel to a more gripping /ruff surface she was up and mobile

!!!! I can't wait for CJ's pretty eggs to hatch. My count so far heading into one week left is 11 unless I do something really dumb AGAIN

My First Attempt to Hatch eggs

HovaBator Still/Thermal Air Egg Incubator 1602N

7 Lavender Orphington eggs (purchased via E-Bay) (The auction was for 6 ...they sent 8...one was broken)


After reading many posts in various forums I realized I was not nearly as prepared as I initially thought...The incubator is new but I have had it for 2 years and it had accumulated dust.

Had I known the importance of a fan I would have bought one but it was too late...

I ordered WIGGLE WORM...I slid it over the sensor and had to use two runner bands to keep it from slipping out.

I read and read and still do not know how much water (if any) should be in the incubator when I start. I am going to fill the inner middle tray.

I marked the eggs with a pencil for turning purposes.

I did not open the box of eggs until last night...they were wrapped in bubble wrap..I hope I didn't mess up this early in the game!

I just put the water in the tray...temp dropped to 99.1

7 minutes to start time....

Thanks!!! I am so nervous and excited...4 minutes and counting...temp is back to 99.5

Day 1- 4:00 AM Eggs placed in incubator! temperature fell..now 97.9

Mine drops in temp when I first add the eggs! They are cooler so it will take a little time for the temp to come back up

Drop in temp is ok as long as it goes back up, as long as it doesn't get too high, when I got home yesterday mine was down to 98.9, but "I quickly got it back up. As long as you get it back up it will only delay your hatch some, think about, when hens are hatching their own they get up to eat and stuff during the day so the temp goes down then.
