Silkiemom, I would like your opinion on something...I got to see the Black silkie rooster and hen today. I was quite disappointed. The hen is a non-bearded silkie and the rooster was pretty rough looking. The man is saving the eggs for me to buy next week. There will probably be 6 silkie eggs + 6 more EE eggs. The good news is that I did get 5 EE eggs to put under my broody Buff Orpington. The bad news is that I'm having second thoughts about purchasing the silkie eggs since they probably won't be show quality. On the other hand, I could possibly sell the chicks right off, just to keep a good relationship with this gentleman. What would you do?

Then, I have another predicament I'd love your thoughts on.

I know of a silkie breeder (with very good quality birds) about an hour & a half from me...so that's like $20+ for gas right there. Then, she charges $36 for a dozen eggs. I REALLY want those eggs, but my DH is like, "No way, that's too much!" I'm trying to think how I can make some money. Would you (or have you) paid that much for good silkie eggs?

Hey cali chick it is amazing the difference hatching local eggs versus shipped. I just candled my 6 ameraucanas eggs tonight from my own flock.... All have perfect air cells and I could see great veins and pulsing black blobs. The shipped silkies set the same night are really depressing me.... Detached air cells abound and out of 6 eggs I candled only 1 seems to have any signs of life and its not nearly as vigorous. I am waiting to candle the rest.... I'd go get the silkie eggs but Im now on my 3rd batch of shipped silkies with terrible results. So I've wasted a ton of money!!! Where is this breeder???? I am in California after all.... ;)

Good luck!!!

Two days from lockdown for 2 eggs (Light Sussex) I'm hoping

It would be so nice to get something out of $50 and 21 days of electricity usage.

My hobby has followed me to school! Or, well, I kinda sorta dragged it to school by the tail! XD

I sat about 25 button quail eggs in a HM incubator I brought to school. I alo sat about 80 at home, later that day. They hatched like, at 2 AM or something. They were 90% dry when I checked at 6. I woke up like 5 times in the middle of the night. Now I know why! I had 16 of my own our and it was like 20% humidity! Only 2 others were stuck, bringing my # up to 18. Isn't that cool? Yeeeeah, I suck at humidifying my 'bator. Maybe a couple from school hatched...?

Did they look rough because they werent being cared for properly or were they just poor quality birds? My silkie hen that I just hatched from is far from SQ, but she is still very pretty! How much is he trying to charge you for them? If it's not too much I would buy them anyways because they are local and don't have to be shipped. I have paid alot more than $36 for SQ silkie eggs. If I were you, I might try hatching the ones that aren't as far away to see how your hatch rate is, if it's good then I would definetly drive to get the eggs! I know it might be upsetting if you spent that kind of money and didn't have any hatch is why I suggest that. I can't find anyone within 100 miles of me that sells silkie hatching eggs so it would be worth it to me because they don't have to be shipped. That is just my opinion though. lol

Don't know how helpful that was but I try, lol

I had to help the last one out last night, and I left him and the 3 other silkies that hatched in the bator overnight, I was a little worried about the one I helped because he seemed weak when I went to bed, but when I checked on them this morning they were all 3 looking up at me like can we go in the brooder now with everyone else,

So I put them in. Here is a pic I took last night of the first 10, havent got pics with the other 3 yet.
