I'm on day 20 and I think I'm going to have some cinco de mayo babies! I have 40 eggs in the bator BCM and buttercups a few EEs as well. Some eggs have already started to hatch! Lots of chirping going on. These were all shipped eggs.

JoAnn_WI_4-H_Mom I am sorry your eggs haven't hatched yet--I hope they still do, just late. My first hatch was almost as bad--2 hatched, then died, so no babies. Try again, you still learn as you go!

They are okay for 3 days I can never wait that long either and I always shrink wrap somebody I wait maybe 48 to 60 hrs and of course the babies are always just fine so wait as long as you can

I didn't wait-- there were so many of 'em playing hockey with the other ones! I took them into the presteamed up bathroom and pulled em out, as well as their shells and the dead egg. And shrinkwrapped two of 'em even with the steamy bathroom. So I learned--by experience--to help the shrinkwrapped ones. Didn't read up on "how to" first, I thought i didn't have much time-- one had stopped peeping and was barely moving. That one died--I helped to much too fast. Second one I was a bit slower with and it's running around in the brooder now--I don't even know which one it was.


I later did find a thread about helping with the zipping--I would like to learn how to help when the white membrane is fully intact and stays put--anyone know? and can we pm so I won't send this thread off topic?

Anyway, I have 11 peepers running around the brooder, two that definately died, and 5 more unhatched eggs--I'm leaving them be for now, because no pips, but I think they're shrinkwrapped.

Well, I still have only three pips. One of the pips was a bloody pip. I figured it wouldn't make it but, it's nearly zipped all the way around though. It will be out soon!

No pips day 23, but there is an odor....

Steamed up the bathroom, took out any that looked like they could be the culprit. Let the rest go. Couldn't see movement in any of them, but I never can.

Took them out to the compost pile to autopsy. Most looked like they quit around week 2, I try to leave the maybes in, but one was almost there and STILL ALIVE.

Made a quick and painless end to it. Sad way to start the morning.

So I guess I will let the rest go a bit longer.

Brower is sending me a new thermostat, no argument at all, as I was able to document temp swings of 96F - 103F in any given 24 HR period with only a 1 degree shift in the room.

So hopefully the next hatch will go better. By the lateness of the hatch, I guess it spent a lot more time on the low end than the high.


And I'm going to have to water down the compost pile when I get home, that odor really carries.

I also have a Brower, but not using it for this current hatch. I still have a week to go on those eggs. This batch of Cochins were/are being incubated in a Brinsea Octagon 20. I woke up this morning to a 'bator full of babies! So far, I have 9 hatched out of the 14 eggs that made it to lockdown (from 20 eggs to start with). I still have 5 eggs in the 'bator, two with visible pips. I had to open the incubator quickly to remove hatched chicks and shells, because it was getting too crowded and blocking my view of what was happening. The humidity level had been decreasing anyway, so I decided it would be best to remoisten the sponge at the same time. Luckily, this unit stabilizes and increases humidity fairly quickly, and so far opening the 'bator to remove chicks hasn't caused any problems with shrink-wrapping. The pipper were still in the very early stages of hatching, but I'm still keeping my eye on them, just in case.

I was really confused! I thought yesterday was day 21!!! Today is day 21 for me!!! 3 have hatched now. The first one was a day early! I've got a pip in another and I am waiting on the others! Can't wait to see what else hatches today!

At first glance, many of our new Cochin chicks appeared to be black. Now that I've taken close up pics of them, however, I'm wondering if some of them will turn out to be dark blue, afterall. One is obviously lighter than the rest, so I feel sure that one will be a light blue color. Here is a sampling of pics just to give you an idea of the different ranges of colors I am seeing. This is my first time hatching Cochins. (They are standard size, btw.) What do you all think?
