Anyone Hatching on the 4th?

I woke up to another millie baby! The other pip is still just a pip, but it has made a little bit of progress. The last one to hatch is pretty sticky, so I don't know what's up with that. The hygrometers are reading 70+, but all 5 chicks seem to be hanging out by them also. So i'm thinking the humidity isn't as high as I think it is. You guys think it would be okay to open it and toss a piece of wet paper towel in there real quick? I could take one of the windows out, so I'm not opening the whole thing.

I think that would be fine, if you can just slip it in through a window. Real quick.......

That's strange, a crack to the bottom of the shell?? I think I would help. Just be careful, take it slow, and stop if you see blood.

I always forget to mention the blood thing. I would think a crack is from the chick trying to push out, that's why I said it is probably too big to turn in there. Let us know how you do DouglasPeeps!

I just remembered because hubby tried to help one out this past week, and went too fast. There was lots of blood, and he didn't make it. So, be careful, and take it slow...........

Yeah, my dad did that last summer with one of mine, it survived, but it had spraddle leg. Luckily, I was able to correct that. It was a pretty little splash dutch chick, couldn't lose that one!

**************************UPDATE***************************

I pulled the chick from the incubator and put it on a plate and used tweezers to carefully work on the shell. As soon as I pulled it out, it was obvious that it was stuck. The chick was peeping so loudly. I was able to remove most of the shell, but quite a bit of the inner membrane was stuck to the chick. Is was stuck on half of its head, eye, neck, wing, and down the side. So stuck in fact that her head as stuck to her body. The membrane as SO hard. I can not believe how dry it was. My humidity was the same as when the other chicks hatched. No blood. I wrapped the chick with wet papertowels to help loosen the dried membrane and put it back in the incubator. I bumped up my humidifier quite a bit and watched. The chick looked great aside from the membrane being stuck to it. Yolk sac absorbed. After a few minutes I pulled it out again and the membrane was easily removed in almost all places. The chick was now able to lift its head as it as stuck in a bent down position. I took out my 2 chicks that had already hatched as they wouldn't leave this little one alone and it was at a disadvantage. They are now in a cozy brooder eating and drinking. The chick is drying off and trying to get up. She looks great! I think she will make it!

I am so glad that I went with my gut instinct and chose to get her out. Talk about nerve-racking! I think I am still shaking!

I'm also glad you decided to do it. I hate when that happens. Humidity is fine, others hatch fine, then this happens. What's your humidity at now? Do you still have others in there, and have they pipped? Congrats on the little Orp! What color is she? I've got 2 blues from MP'"s.

Talk about a "newbie" nightmare, but thankfully to all my reading here on BYC, I knew what to do!

Humidity is in the mid-70's right now. It is just a bit higher than before, but at this point I am leaving it. I can't tell what color she is. I must be a dork! She looks both dark and light. I am working on a picture.....maybe you can help me.

Thanks!!!

Yeah, do that. Do you have any more pips? I just took picstures of mine. I'm not sure of the colors either. They look blue, but one looks black. I guess we'll have to go to the expert--MP. I'll put them on later. I gotta go play with chickens now. lol
