Anyone have a hen or eggs set for October? Join us!

okay no longer so excited. just candled the eggs and i'm down to 5 :( there were 3 more blood rings. I'm starting to think these eggs aren't going to make it til hatch at all.
Sorry to hear that. I only had 4 out of 10 hatch on my first hatch. Mysty Blue (my avatar) is the only one left and she is the sweetest snuggle buddy! Sometimes I think the fewer chicks you have, the more precious they are to you.

I hope all 5 of them hatch for you.

Ive decided that I am going to have to take the babies away when they hatch. for their safety. the dominique is breaking some eggs and eating them and my sillkie got some taste for it ! wahhhhhhh!!!

no matter how hard I tried to seperate them they just have a hissy fit !

I may have more than 18 because the others lay in there few times. I may have 30. The dominique is a bully she wont let Minnie have her eggs. I will put them in different boxes Dominique will push Minnie out. I went in there found few half eaten eggs, they were newer eggs so not fully developed. Hopefully the babies will be ok soon ! I think Minnie will be a great mom. I am going to find a way to keep her away from Dom. so she can be with her babies.

My broody Partridge Cochin bantam is sitting on eggs from our favorite chicken a black frizzle chochin who was killed by a hawk. She was the tamest chicken we'd had, so we put her eggs under the broody hen and chicks are due Oct. 3. We are hoping to get another friendly frizzle out of the batch of 11 eggs.
This is our first time letting a hen hatch eggs (it was on the schedule for next year, but the death of our favorite got us to go this year).

Lockdown starts tomorrow for 15 of my eggs. Hatch day is October 2!

I better get the other incubator fired up tonight. (Or at least go get it out of storage-LOL) I need to experiment with humidity and how to add water during lockdown. You guys with broody hens are fortunate in this respect. In the morning I plan to candle those eggs one last time to look for movement and then place them into the other incubator. I'll post how many go in tomorrow. Are any of you using egg cartons or just laying them down for hatching?

I hope my family doesn't mind if I put the bator on the kitchen counter.

I want to be able to watch them hatch.

13 eggs went into lockdown. (The other 2 looked like early quitters). All 13 had veins, but I didn't really watch for movement because they were pretty filled up. The weird thing is, 4 of them looked more like a Day 11 chick than a Day 18 chick. There was still space...I put a "?" on them but don't expect those to hatch. So, out of 30 original eggs, I'm hoping at least 9 make it.

I also candled the 3 other eggs that are a week later, on Day 11. They all had veins, movement and good aircells. Go chickies, Go!

Yeah, I know the fewer there are the more you bond with each one. But at the same time I will be butchering any roosters. I'm just not getting eggs from that guy again. I'll wait til my moms rooster is matured enough to cause her hens to have fertile eggs.

I couldnt sleep good last night! I was worried about poor Minnie. My Dominique is such a jealous bully ! So this morning I worked on an old Bar table my friend gave me, I put on chicken wires, fresh straws, and homemade box for her. I collected as many eggs I could ( I forgot to count! ) I am guessing 12 eggs. I put Minnie in the box and put her in the new place. she was kind of a little scared but didnt take long for her to know this is her new home ! Dominique has her own eggs 6 of them. Chickies will be here anytime !!! (Oct 2-3rd )
