Anyone have a NICE Polish rooster? Personality info needed!

Funny I should read this now. My 13 year old just knocked on my bedroom window and needed help. Our polish roo was after him. I told him to just hold out the stick he had and if he came near just push him away. He will stop if you do that and don't turn your back on him.

I've got a golden laced - he is aggressive and challenges almost everyone. I've grabbed him and held him upside down for awhile, which seemed to get my message across for about two weeks, but he is at it again. We didn't raise him and he's been rehomed twice - first because he was supposed to be a pullet and second because he was challenging the head roo of my friend's flock and then we lost our beloved GLW roo and decided to take the Polish over so he wouldn't kill or get killed. That said, he is an excellent protector of his ladies who originally paid him no mind after the big GLW, but now most follow his food-locator cackle, etc. Also, he does this really adorable counter-crow to the egg-laying song... I love it even though he's not one to turn your back on.

We recently hatched 12 chicks from the BLRW eggs, and those birds are now two months old. We just integrated the flocks together and they are sorting it out, but he is eventually going to take out the roos one by one (this is my guess) so we are deciding if we keep him or one of the up and coming mutts which are all gorgeous. Our Polish is a loud crower as well and does it all day long.

Good luck with yours!

I started with 2 polish roos - neither of which I raised from chicks. Neither were aggressive, but I had the two of them and one other roo and three was too many for my girls, so I rehomed one of the polish b/c the couple looking for a roo liked him. I still have the one polish roo and we both do our own thing with no problem. I can't catch him easily unless he's already roosted for the night and then he doesn't complain at all. No pecking or chasing ever.

i have a 3 month old bantam that i am sure is a roo. i hatched him and he was the only one for a few weeks. he's not corwing yet but he does this screech that is funny!

he's good to me and since i've been keeping him mostly in the house he's become more like a pet parrot than a chicken-even has a big bird cage. loves to fly over to me when he thinks i have treats for him. loves to try and fly to my head every oppourtunity he gets when he is out. loves any human company but seems to not like the other birds i've hatched since then-might just be a size difference though or because i babied him too much. he chases me in the yard when i have the bag of treats.

i live in a residential area too and found that my neighbors who've owned chickens before didn't like the roos crowing. but i don't plan on getting rid of my polish roo. i'll gladly keep him in the house as a pet and hope to eventually breed him to the other polish ladies.

We just got rid of a roo who has half Polish ad he attacked my younger brother. He growled at me like a dog, so I know where this is coming from. I've dealt with it all.

Ahh! I really hope you're both right! Our Silkie is also a demon. But I've devoted my patience and his anger to finding a way to deal with him. (AKA: I can't bare to kill him so I'm keeping him around until he poses a threat to others.) Right now, the only ones who notice his wrath are me and a poor d'Uccle boy that he tore the skin off of two years ago.

Not a fun night.

I have a 1 year old Buff Polish male named Roc. He is so gentle the kids just walk up to him and carry him around. Sometimes I think it is not necessarily the breed of rooster its just that every rooster is different in how they will treat their flock and people. The mean ones have to go to their new home in Freezerland.

I think maybe there are gentle/aggressive birds to every species. I raised cockatiels for many years and I've had some, that even though I hand reared them, grew up to be distrusting of humans and would bite every chance they got, and I had ones that had been raised with little to no human contact, yet once they were tamed they were sweet as could be. I also keep reading that Sebright roos are suppose to be aggressive. I have a little guy named Pip and he is about the sweetest thing on Earth. He is probably the only chicken I have that HASN'T tried to peck me or another chicken. He used to butt chests with my other roos, but it already seems like my Bantam Barred Cochin roo is king of the coop, lol. Poor Pip is like the very bottom roo out there. He seemed heartbroken when I moved him out the coop and when I go out to feed and water them and spend time with them, he sits with me and waits, like I'm suppose to bring him back into the house with me, and when I put him back down he give me this look like I just betrayed him. I eventually want Polishes, and I hope that when I get some, they will be gentle and good as I have heard nothing but good things about them up until now. I hope your boy stays sweet and doesn't cause you problems. Good luck with him!

I have a Polish Roo & pullet - they're both real sweeties!! They are quirky, but I understand that's because they can't see well with all that fluff up there! LOL!

I have a GL bantam and a SL bantam roo..they will no doubt fight eachother, but are sweet as can be to me. My Gl I handle all the time..His name is Rasta lol. My SL is more skiddish only because I dont pick him up a lot, but hes always nice, and always backs down to me.
