Anyone have a square foot garden?

Quote:
I live so far up north I can't even plant anything in the ground until Memorial Day! The earliest I've had tomatoes has been the end of August. I'm planting cherry tomatoes this year, so hopefully I'll have some in early August.

I've never heard of lasagna gardening, I'll have to look it up.

Is anybody using the SFG method this year? I am going to try it for the first time this year. I have gardened for years, and every year "was going to be different". I have been so overwhelmed with weeds and the garden looks awful by the end of July. So, I'm going to give this method a try.

Anybody else?

No problem.

I'm laying out new beds this year. I'm downsizing from a big chicken coop to several chicken tractors that I can set on the beds after the season is over. Will also be using the tractors to cut down on bugs by placing them between the different rows. More will be set up in other area to start even more planting beds.

That is a very good idea. We will be building a chicken tractor shortly, and I can size it up to the garden bed. I bought pre-made raised garden beds at Sam's Club for $39 each. They are 84"x42"x8", so I'm going to adapt them to our needs. We would've made them, but we are not the best at making stuff out of wood. The chicken tractor is going to be a stretch. I have these ideas in my head, and I can write down measurements and draw cute pictures of what I want. But, the final product isn't what I picture in my head. But at least I keep trying!

Yes we did it last year and loved it. Did not love that the chickens and dogs broke through our fencing and ate almost all of it. This year we invest in a better fence.

we are huge fans of square foot gardening. We don't have the time to pull weeds constantly. If you plant the plants close enough, they snuff out the weeds. And don't forget the three sisters, we plant corn beans and squash together, plant corn to let it get a start, then plant your pole beans to use the corn for support and lastly plant your squash or melons to cover the ground, help preserve moisture and stops weeds. I especially like square foot gardening for our green beans, we plant four or five rows about six inches apart and 10 foot long, makes picking go faster.
