I found some saxony ducks on craigslist and have been thinking about getting them. I have a small knowledge about them like them being dual purpose and all but I was wondering what other people's experience with them is. How good do they lay? What is their personality like?

They must be rare, I cant find much about them. If only I didnt live in the city. I am only allowed 3 'farm fowls' but I think I might be able to get around that because I have heard that it is per lot, we are on 2 lots so mabe I can get 2 trios. I am planning on just a trio but might try for 2 pair. I have a huge backyard, our lot is like 1/4 acre and more than half of that is the backyard.

ALBC says that its 2000 census of domestic waterfowl in North America found only four people with 57 breeding Saxony, that isnt very many.

I have seen several people selling Saxonies. Holderread's have them, but they are done for the year with ducklings. I'm sure they will have pairs though in the Fall. I have also seen them several times on Eggbid and Ebay.

The only thing stopping me from getting them right now is well a couple things. I need to finish the gates, they are done but not on yet and I am waiting on the breeder to reply back, I might just call them. I am getting so excited, they are so pretty. Back when I still had a mixed flock I saw some for sale but the breeder sold them before I called them. Yay for city ducks!

Well I called the person and I am going out to look at them tomorrow evening. They said the birds are multipurpose, they are good layers, decent meat birds, and good show birds. They want $50 per trio which isnt too bad because most ducks lay better their second year anyway and they are kinda rare so thats what about $20 per hen and $10 for the drake. They have tons of ducklings for $15 but I dont really want to deal with messy ducklings. I am getting so excited, I will be sure to post lots of pics.

Oh I will make them work, LOL. My overall plan is to gather the eggs this year, maybe try to sell some to some BYCers for a late hatch then come spring I want to get a little incubator and hatch some myself or try to let one of the hens go broody. I plan on taking tons of pictures, they will be my new addiction.
