Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I keep one my husband’s old dove chairs by the coop. It fold up extremely small.

I saw the comment about the roosters for sale or give away on Craigslist, etc. I have 11 (soon to be 13) unsexed chicks, what am I suppose to do if I end up with 10 roosters? Either sale, eat or make a separate pen? What are the other options?
I think that Craigslist comment was from me & I didn't mean for it to sound judge-y. :duc
It's definitely the responsible thing to do, over just "freeing" unwanted cockerels in random places.
Of course I wish every bird can find a safe home where they are wanted for their charm & skills, especially if they are nice boys.
I was just trying to make the link that someone said about there being a lot of feral chickens lately and people trying to get rid of extra roosters before winter.

If/when the zombie apocalypse arrives, I want you in my village. That is some *awesome* ghetto homesteading skills!

Cindi

Who splinted a broken ankle today with an unknown piece of plastic, some Maxi pads, a couple bags of ice, and lotsa ace wrap...queen of 3rd world nursing/mad postapocalyptic skills!
And you will be in my zombie apocalypse village, Cindi! I can knit us all chicken hats of different breeds!

As for the weather, I would take cool and rainy over the heat wave & wildfires we're experiencing right now. The temperature has been 101 degrees during the day & cooling down to 90 degrees at night. My poor girls. The only one who doesn't seem to mind the temperature is Alice who's in the middle of molting right now.
You should come up to Portland for a spell! It's actually not rainy this week. Gorgeous sunny 70' dropping down to 40' at night.
Autumn leaves, cool breeze, pumpkin spice
*sigh* I love this time of year here

I know exactly how you feel. My little B. Cochin loves snuggles and the older girls seem to pick on her. I want to make her a house chicken soooo bad. But I've left her to find her place in the flock. I still give her snuggles when no-one is looking
So I have a question.
Do they pick on her because they're jealous when they see you snuggling her? Or is it because you're afraid she'll keep having to reintegrate with the flock if you bring her inside & then put her back out?

Sorry one more post --- then I'm going back to bed (I hope!! Dang dog had to poo at 2am again :barnie)

Moved into a new house last year.
2 mature apple trees & 2 pear trees. Sooooooo exciting, right?
No. By end of August, i was crying every night because I'd clean up the fallen apples & pears, divide up between cook or compost, and the next morning there's be another 50+ apples & pears on the ground. I made apple juice, apple sauce, apple butter, apple cake, apple crumble, pear tart, poached pear. I had apple picking parties. Brought em into work by the bucket. :hit
Finally started trench composting the apples. One side of my yard still has a lingering smell of a cider mill.
This year I was lucky to find a neighbor with a pet pig & chickens who comes & picks up regularly.

My chickens also definitely help! They love when I hang them in the run. Just pit them with an apple corer & run twine through. :ya
Ok g'night y'all!
Wish me luck getting back to sleep

Such an epic thread ... so without reading 220 pages where do i find a picture of the mystery chicken

I do believe there are pics on pages 12 and 13 of the very handsome little male.

The female may or may not still be around. There have not been any new sightings of her.
