Question. When a momma hen raises her chicks, I am guessing those chicks don’t eat at night? Or does she get up with them?
Mine are better than my kiddo was, they sleep through the night.

I was thinking the same thing about the never get an egg post after people mentioned the appropriateness of thing... Sometimes we're on topic. You guys are so freakin active, I have like 7 pages to catch up on!! I am gonna have to hire a personal assistant just to manage my chickenmail, jeez!
@ smoovie:
The best part of BYC (aside from all the great chicken advice) *is* the socalizing, for real.
In Jersey, women pretty much suck (no offense to NJ BYCers, cuz, well, we're awesome) and you guys are my buds!! I wish I had real-life friends like y'all! Here, everyone is too damn catty or into their own thing to bother with friends. It's weird. When I lived in the midwest, people were so much friendlier <sigh>.
Anyway, I love you guys. I hope nobody shuts down our threads (I keep waiting for someone to delete the majority of posts on my Never Gonna Get an Egg post cuz of all the potty mouth, penisy-type references) cuz it's SO much fun. It's a virtual party, I can hang with you guys and drink my wine and laugh my ass off, and not worry about getting a DUI, or getting judged on my outfit, lol!!
XO! Off to catch up now~
Maybe for bantams?View attachment 1177707
From the TSC ad. If I did the math right that "coop" for 6-8 birds is 2.3' h x 3.5' w x 3.4' d. So 6-8 pigeons?
These make me so sad. I just want to hug them. Are they at least ok around people or are they scared? Did you post a new thread yet? Can you post a link here when you do? I don't want to miss it.There are actually.... 8.... 5 brown, 3 white... we picked up the whites today. Here are pics of the whites and their quarantine area:

Poop is worm free, and they FINALLY got to stretch their wings and FLAP LIKE CRAZY!!!
Uh, is the one middle chicken a rooster?
That's about the size egg that my bantam lays. Did it have a yolk in it?Lizbeth gave us a large marble yesterday. The pic is with today's egg. View attachment 1178258
I'm physically weak so I need help lifting stuff sometimes (bad back/ f-ed up shoulder), but I have 3 brothers and I'm pretty good about knowing that I'm fully capable of taking care of things on my own. I've been divorced for 10 years so I don't have anyone else to do stuff for me. Sometimes it's good to know you can take care of yourself, even if there's someone around to help when you need it. In fact. I literally put together a wooden bunkbed set more than once, bunked. IDK how I was able to lift an entire bed and place it on top of another but I did it... probably part of the reason my back is jacked up though (not my shoulder though, that happened at work).I loaded all the wood by myself into my cart, and little irritated that a worker that passed by me TWICE didn’t offer to help. A stranger asked if he could help me load it on my trailer. Very kind, but an EMPLOYEE didn’t offer to help!!! YES, I could have found someone if I really needed help. I am just sayin. And pressure treated wood is heavy. Dang! 8- 16” and 9- 12” 2X4’s.
I blame women for this. Feminist movement. Men and women are equal in value, but our differences should be celebrated. Women need to give men their pen!s’s and their BALLS back, because is blocking the entrance to the Vajay-jay’s! Ain’t nobody winning! I am seeing a bunch of immaculated men and that sure ain’t attractive!
Sassysouth, sound off!
Did she ever lay her egg? I have seen my birds do this and they always end up laying a perfectly normal egg. It's like they can't get comfortable, or don't like that I'm hanging around, or the other chickens are bothering her.Ok my friends....I think my D'uccle is egg bound. She has been standing in her nest box on and off all morning and when I had them out to free range this morning she wasn't herself. She was standing around a lot. She is usually very busy. She is approximately 1 year old. She has been laying about 5 days a week but has slowed up recently. I'm assuming due to shorter days. Her comb is nice and red and she is eating.
I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. As another person who has dealt w/ divorce, I know you'll be ok. It sucks, but you can do this, trust me. Been there, done that w/ 2 kids under 4 years old. I left my husband on April Fool's Day, not intentionally, but it's good for an LOL now & he married is mistress. I know you don't want to say there long term, but is it possible that you can find someone to live w/ you & help pay bills until the spring? That way you can save up $$ for a place. Most places that you'd rent would expect First, Last and Sec deposit to move in. Do you rent your current place? If so, maybe you could ask them if they have another place available, or if they possibly know anyone else who rents. Unfortunately I don't really know many people out your way, but if you're on facebook check out some of the local buy/sell/trade sites for places to rent. Some people advertise there rather than newspapers b/c it's free. Good luck! If you need someone to talk to, I'm here for you.Well Chicken Peeps I need some good mojo. Thoughts and prayers to the chicken gods. I don't know what else. Anything you want to send my way through the universe.
I have to move. Need to find a place for me, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 15 chickens. A rather daunting task.
After 12 years together, my relationship is over. I'm not going to go into to details but to say I'm scared shitless for my future is an understatement. How I'm ever going to do it alone I don't know. I've got great family and friends with me but I could use all the positive energy I can get.
Don't mind me if I'm scarce around here. I'm trying to pick up the pieces of my life.
Thanks for reading my post and sending good vibes my way.
That sounds exactly like our 'If we don't take it, it's going to die' motto in my family.. Just about ever single pet we've had was b/c If we didn't take it, it was going to die. They have been babied already... we tossed down hand fulls of corn and scratch... they were scared of it at first! When we put the fermented feed down, they tore over to it and gobbled it up! Very happy(er) chickens, that's for sure.
Also, super glad DH got in on it... at first I think he was just humoring me... but when he saw their squalid conditions, he wanted to hurry up and get them OUT of there!
So now you're bragging? I'm sitting here wrapped up in a blanket debating if I should turn on the heat or grab another blanket and you had 80 degrees... We're supposed to have 71 tomorrow... but it's supposed to rain, of course. I guess it *could* be snow so I should be happy. I should be, but I'm not.It was sunny and 80 here today and I am probably sunburnt! When dh and I built the previous run we build it on a leverl surface and moved it with the tractor. Well, I am building in place on unlevel ground over a large tree root. It is fun! I mean, real fun! Not!
The pool ladder! Brilliant idea! We have an extra one (pool was leaking and bought a new one b/c you don't just throw away $160 worth of water you JUST bought!)... I'll have to see if it fits in the run. Hell, I might see if it fits in the coop.FINALLY got DH around to doing a deep litter... in their coops and in the run! We have the TSC diy coop kits, which will work for the next year, until we get the 13x15(?) coop built! I convinced him we COULD remove the poop board from under their roosts, because all it does is collects poop RIGHT IN their sleeping/nesting area. We got sawdust down in their coops and in the run. Check it out!!!View attachment 1178800 View attachment 1178801 View attachment 1178802
We also got DHs sawhorses out of their run and gave them a pool ladder to roost on. Dh is THRILLED!!!
I nominate
(that is against the rules..you are not suppose to announce it SILLY!)
Thanks! Hug & talk chicken again. At NO POINT did I want to offend you, nor be political in any way. There is a huge difference between a feminist and one who is overly militant about it.
I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.
Edit to add: Feminazi is not a term I coined, but one being used for those militant women who are man bashing in the name of feminism. Again, sorry to offend.
ANYONE can nominate silly Here #1I don't get a vote cause I'm not a person who can nominate.
I don't get a vote cause I'm not a person who can nominate.
I can't afford to stay here alone. It's also WAY more work then I can manage.
Not to mention it's where "we" lived. I can stay until I find something but I'd rather move on.
What does Project Manager mean?EVERYONE HERE needs a friend badge...too bad I can only nominate 3!
