Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

When he walked up they were all standing around Penny! He knew something was definitely wrong.

They know who loves them and watches out for them. Our Rottweiler mix (Alice) is very protective. No blue jay or c:mad:hickadee is allowed near. Squirrels are treed. Baby rabbits are killed :hit

is afraid of chickens,

Nevertheless, Alice is terrified of Rhode Island Reds after a new little spitfire RIR started pecking her feet. She'd sneak up on Alice and peck. Yikes! I don't think Alice can tell the RIRs apart, so she keeps her distance. Maybe it's a healthy respect rather than terror.

Now, the other dog, Lucy, had to be re-homed to a nice suburban family with a fenced back yard. She mauled three chickens, and then killed three more. It's like she lived to kill chickens. Watched them all the time with beady eyes. But, she was otherwise a happy, delightful dog.

I never thought we would have a farm use for my parents' 8lb Cockapoo/Dachshund mutt. I thought she would want to kill my chickens, but several encounters with my Mama hen disabused her of the notion that chickens were play things. However, my last batch of chicks was fairly adventurous after Mama weaned them any they would slip through my electric fencing and go exploring. One day my mom told her to "get those bad chickens" and she chased them back through the fence without harming them. She is now our chicken herder. However, if we have to catch a chicken, we need to be careful that she can't jump to grab the bird. Something about a chicken's "Help! I'm caught" distress call sends her prey drive over the edge. It's like a squeaky toy. Fortunately, she is usually content with chasing them back where they belong.

Morning fellow Squatchers!
All animals have been fed & let out. FF for the chooks. Pollock & veggie formula for the canine. Cheesy rolls for the humans. Now time for coffee & catchup. :caf

I wish our dog Olive would herd. She was a rescue & hates any kind of violence or aggressiveness. She even gets upset & leaves the room when we're swatting at flies or mosquitoes!!! :hit

The chickens are definitely alpha. I think they started pecking her because they were curious about her & she just runs away.

My BR TangoTango has bad eyesight & I think she likes hanging around Olive as a kind of guide dog, but sometimes she'll turn to her & pick something out of Olive's fur & freak her out Poor kid!!

Anyhoo can't wait to see what the day holds! Come to momma, mrs squatch!! :fl
