Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

Great idea.

I looked at the all purpose sand and found all purpose gravel is cheaper here and is washed so I'll go with one of those.

Look for playground sand, it has to be safe for little kids, but I'm not sure how it's cleaned and/or treated. It should not contain harmful chemicals or microorganisms and fungi. It may be worth checking out, also diatomaceous earth that you can get for livestock can be used in the coops.

Do all bantams lay about the same frequency?

How often?

Neither of my 2 little gift pullets have laid anything yet. I guess they are just at the point of lay, maybe.

I have a Sebright pullet that started at 20 weeks and averaged 5-6 eggs a week. After 6 weeks she went broody, now that's over, and we can soon get those delightful tiny eggs again. I'd like to get more of her line and start a tiny egg company.....but frequent broodiness can really hurt the averages. Tiny eggs are great for partial recipes, hors d'oeuvres, little kids, etc.

My Cochins in their prime laid 4 eggs a week then after a month went psycho broody. They are nutty about hatching eggs.
The first go round in the broody breaker took 6 weeks!
The second go round the tiny black Cochin went broody at the same time as the big BO. I decided to let it run it's course. Funny thing about it is the BO decided she hatched the little black bird and therefore would defend to the death if need be.
My splash wyandotte found that out the hard way. She pulled a little black feather and got beat near to death. She spent months in the hospital coop.
They are not mean broody birds just relentless.

I think the game bantams are similar in laying and broody cycles.

Actually the Cochin was older then the Buff. They just happened to both go broody at the same time and kept ending up in the same nest.
It formed a super strong bond and the Buff was the Cochin's protector the rest of her days. I am horrible about taking pictures. I never seem to take the interesting ones. The Cochin is still with us.
She has raised a few groups of adopted kids. This year she raised giant Cochin's and barnevelder.
Since her buff buddy passed I had to remove her for her own safety. She, her kids, another bantam Cochin and a single leghorn are in the coop with hoop run.

We do miss Twinkie. Yup creative name there.

12 yr old I don't know what with a morbid side to my sense of humor in a 48 yr old female body, vicariously living the teen years I never did through my kids and their friends. My kids agree with their friends, I'm an awesome mom. Guess I'm doing something right, and it's not just being a friend more than a parent, it's being there for them when they need me, and when they want me to. It's encouraging them to do things they enjoy, and helping them get what they need to do what they enjoy. It's understanding them and being willing to be silly or serious with them. That's where the 12 yr old comes in, the weird, silly, gross stuff.

I am a nurse, turned stay at home mom, so I am very open about discussions, saying things for the shock factor, etc. My husband can be a prude about body talk, but will often say things I find boaderline socially acceptable. My 11 yo son is whitty and fun to be around, minus the hormones. He always comes to me to talk about things and now that he is older and has boy drama at school (at times), I refer him to his dad on how to handle things the manly way.
What I instill in my son is what it is to grow up and be a man What it takes for a man to take care of his wife and then a family.
Anyway, got way off there. On to light hearted subjects!

Oh yeah! I'm way to open about the human body & it's functions. My 12 year old daughter finds it very helpful, except when we're around "normal" people. I'm the one person that people can openly talk to about their poop, which happens at work quite often.
