Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I agree....moist is a creepy word unless we are talking about carving into a nice big turkey. We are having some friends over on Saturday night to make saurkraut balls. For those of you who aren't familiar with these little deep fried balls ( I know... another creepy word) of goodness .Let me tell you that you are missing out.They are sausage, cream cheese, chopped jalapenos, various spices and of course saurkraut. You roll it into balls ( I know) and then plop them in the deep frier. Then we all sit around and listen to our arteries clog while we eat them

I need that recipe!

We keep a broody box. It consists of an enclosed area with hardware cloth and a door into a "yard" for the broody to be able to stretch her legs and take care of business, the box contains her nest, food and water. It sits in the free range area next to the roosting area, so everyone can see eachother, but can't get to eachother. The broody box can be closed off at night for added protection, and the yard can be used as the chicks begin to explore. We also have a grow out box, again everyone can see eachother, so youngsters can get big enough to defend themselves from older hens, once Mom is ready to join the flock again. This broody box can also be used as a hen hospital, just have to clean really good, mostly used for injured hens.

This is exactly what we just did. Someone had a small (think 1-3 chickens) coop + run on sale on eBay, so we bought it specifically to use it for broodys and a chicken hospital when necessary.

Tomorrow morning, I'm planning on getting up early and giving all my adult chickens numbered bands. I ordered them last week and they came in today, and I can hardly wait to put them on and get the chickens' numbers in my Flock Inventory list. Yes, I'm a spreadsheet geek. Orange for my 2016 birds, purple for my 2017 birds.

This weekend, I'll be working on putting another one of these setups together.
A 5'x 5' PVC run.

A tote with a door/ramp.

If one has a broody and eggs you want to hatch (New Hampshire/Dominique eggs this time), she must be given eggs. Cause, chicken math. And I have another mama with chicks who is using the setup I've pictured here.

Where did you get them? Just a note... Make sure you cut them flush with the top, I've had to cut two off my birds who managed to get a little tab and pull. I use color to distinguish year and like numbers to id breeders.

I got them from Chicken Charm (https://www.chickencharm.co/product-page/25-zband-numbered-poultry-leg-bands). They come in 10 different colors and you can request numbers 001-300. They didn't have the numbers I wanted in purple, so they told me what they had available in purple or told me I could pick a different color with the numbers I wanted. They work out to about $0.26 a piece, which is cheaper than Strombergs and they have twice as many colors.

And yes I know about cutting the zip ties flush. I had a rooster mess up his foot because he pulled the tail. Fortunately I caught it before the foot was beyond salvaging.

Thanks! I order those 90 degree 3 way corners from Amazon. You can't get them at the hard ware store. I'm also considering revamping the top so it has a slope so water doesn't puddle in the tarp.

Oh and those pavers I have in the corners. Those are to keep the run from blowing away in the wind. I have wire strung across the opposing corners and I put a paver or the tote on top of the wire.
