Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

The coop, 30's is cold and damp here, or so I thought until I started reading stuff on this site. Can't imagine breaking ice so my animals can drink every hour or so. I would freeze! LOL

About 2 months ago, I was walking along the edge of the woods on my property and I spooked off what I thought was a lone wild turkey. I heard flapping and frantic clucking which I've heard before when I walk up on them roosting before dusk. I've seen dozens of wild turkeys around here and didn't think much more of it. Except this one sounded exactly like a chicken.

Over the past several weeks this happened once again, same spot. Weird wild turkey, right?

This morning i slept a little later than normal and I'm walking to my coop to let my birds out of the coop and I hear frantic clucking and think, "man, I didn't put one of my girls up, it's a wonder she made it through the night alive." Looked in the coop, all my girls and guys are there. At this point I'm certain I'm losing my mind.

Fast forward to this evening, about an hour before roosting, I was cleaning out my brooder and go to dump the shavings along the edge of the woods and I hear the fleeing frantic flapping and clucking again, but this time I see it... it's a darn chicken! Not one of mine, either. She took off through the woods.

I have a wild chicken, y'all. I think she was calling this morning because she was looking for my birds because they weren't out yet.

I went out after dark but there was no sign of her, that I could see. I put cracked corn out for her.

Only one of my neighbors has chickens and his are locked up tight without ever being let out to free range and they are bantams. This is definitely not a bantam. I don't know where she came from. No one else around me has chickens.

My husband doesn't believe me. We are going to put his game cam out where I've been spooking her and tomorrow morning I'm going to wait before I let my birds out to see if we hear her.

I just think this is the neatest thing. She's GOT to be lonely out there. Anyone have any suggestions on how to catch her? She's been living in the wild unseen for at least 2 months that I know of!

Figure out where she's roosting at night an you'll be able to catch her very easily.

I loved those as a kid & was ecstatic when I found them again! I thought about starting my own fundraiser so I could stockpile them. But then I realized I'd eat all the profits!!!

I think it would be nice if chickens smiled or something to look less mean.

I prefer to interpret that look as 'focus & concentration' vs meanness. Less scary!

We used to heat when the temp got into the 30's. LOL

Just got a notice on my door: they will be filming a movie called "Alex and Me" all next week on my block. The movie is going to be about a Gray Parrot! So y'all can think about me while I can't find a parking place due to the parrot movie.

I have a coal furnace that once it's on it's on...you can adjust it some but even if your not asking for heat, it's heating.

So we don't turn it on till it's in the low 60s in the house for a week or so. We use a few space heaters to take the chill out but it gets cold in here before we take the plunge and light the coal.

What a morning!

Of course on our coldest night so far my lamp goes out in my outdoor brooder (outdoor as in brooder in coop, not in house) .

Not only was it blown out, but when I went to change it the glass part detached itself from the metal screw thing that goes into the actual fixture, so I had to use the old potatoe trick but with an onion because that's all I had.

Most chicks had Mama heating pad so they were good.

A few were out from the heating pad and must have been basking in the heat lamp light when it died and were visibly weak. But they perked up under the light when I changed the bulb.

The fat, fuzzy little Faverolles were also mostly out in the cold, found them in the food pan, of course, but are somehow completely unphased.

I'm headed into work late and I was in such a hurry I didn't have time to do a thorough depoopin'. So now I know I've got chicken poo SOMEWHERE on me, but I CANNOT find it. I smell it, so I know it's there, but it's invisible. I am going to be the stinky person at work today.

Alex was the reason I fell in love with Greys. I was really sad when he passed. What a great tribute!
