Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

More pics.... kinda suck, kiddo was taking them... but anyone venture a guess as to breed (s)? The guy told me, they came with a roo... but the roo was charging at their customers. Said one day his brother basically drop kicked the roo and broke it's wing... and then he THINKS a fox or coyote got it... but no, never fixed it's wing or culled it or anything. After that story, I really had NO CHOICE but to figure out how to ge tthem out of that situation.

Well, they are still at the mulch place... picking them up tomorrow AFTER DH gets home and we can build a temporary coop for them for quarantine. Poor things. The story behind this sucks, so I had to do something to give them a better life. I mean yeesh!

This didn't USED TO BE my life. I could go to a store and come home with what I went to the store for.. not moar chickies!
Uh oh, you've been infected with the dreaded chicken math disease.

Look like red sex links and leghorn crosses to me.

Rae, sweetie, my chicken math is just fine... I have 12 in the run, a broody mama with her 7, 2 week olds in the brooder/hospital coop, and 15 eggs in the incubator.... my math is SPOT ON!!!

oh wait.... ::: mumbling::... YUP... needed 6 moar chickens!

I use a mix of winter wheat, rye grass, alfalfa and red & white clover this time of year. I put it down after I move their fence as they'll eat it before it grows, otherwise. Then in spring I'll put down what they call the contractor's mix which has a lot of spring and summer grasses along with more alfalfa, clover and vetch. The winter wheat will start to die off in the spring and the others will replace it. If I get the mix right, its a one time and done seeding for the most part, but I'll still add winter wheat in the fall, as its an annual.
Those are great to plant. For people who just want a mix for a small area, Sandhill has a section under "Chicken Treats" with lots of things to grow for chickens. I have grown millet for my small birds and chickens, but these are lots of variety. http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/specialty.html

This style works well. The plastic ones with the grids get dismantled by my birds and the smaller feeders like the next link end up with the clips giving out and tipping. The clips that secure the X across the bottom. Then the little metal thing is laying there just waiting to be eaten. Freaked me out and had me sifting litter looking for it.

The better style is available in smaller feeders just have to pay attention to quality design.
That is the same type of feeder I use and I also use a rock or a brick for a booster for my little fluff balls. Works great

Maybe you didn't need them but it sound like they certainly needed you.
I am thinking ISA browns and white rocks or such.

Blooming cold out this morning. Workshop cleaning delayed til tomorrow. I guess I can continue the painting inside, dust, mop, or any number of other chores.... Blech! To much to do! Plus hubby gave me an errand list.....
