Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

PS. Let me throw a dumb question out there too.... or rather, TWO dumb questions:

1. WHY does an incubator have to be in a room with a stable temp? When broodys set, they're outside, and the temps outside can range 30° every day!

2. Why do people boil, and then dry, their eggshells before feeding them back to their chickens?! Seems like an awful lot of extra steps to me.
I can't answer number one.
The answer to number to is those people are NUTS!
Throw the chickens some raw eggs.
I bet PIC would love to break a few eggs in the run for them.

I do save my egg shells.
After cracking the egg to use I do rinse..for all of two seconds the shell then sit it on the cabinet to drip dry.
Once it's dry I shove it into an old glass spaghetti sauce jar.
I'll get a pic soon.

I just boil the eggs and give them the whole egg crunched. We boil them first so they don't know they are eating eggs. We don't want the chickens to develop the habitat of egg eating
They won't develop the habit if you feed them raw eggs.
Myth

1. No clue. No experience.
2. I rinse my eggshells (mainly insides) and let them air dry. I only do that because they crush better to me. Then I store my crumbles in a zip lock bag. I have read that some people throw them back to the chickens in halves, unwashed. I guess it is preference?

I scramble and bake with eggs only. No boiled eggs for us.
:highfive:

Crusty means healing.
If at all possible could you wash it up, even with just a warm wet washcloth?

ETA: there's a lot of oozing associated with a hot spot.
It crusts up as the air gets to it.
Need to get that off gently if you can so the topical stuff can make contact with the skin.

They gave me some pink soapy stuff to wash it with once a day. I thought I should try to remove the crust but she certainly doesn't like me trying. Maybe I'll try a warm compress/washcloth to see if I can get it off. May need a sedative....for me...:lau

Hey! I'm 14, not thirteen. :p

So sorry! That extra year is important. You'll be driving soon! Aaaarrrggghhh

@raecarrow :
VBAC baby!
You can do it!
Thanks! That is what I am hoping for. I was trying for a home birth with my not-so-little guy and it didn't work out that way. He got stuck sunny side up and coming out forehead first. It took them 20 minutes to dislodge him when the did the c-section. The worst part is they were worried about neurological issues so they transferred him to a different hospital because they didn't have the diagnostic equipment to assess him at the hospital where I had the c-section. I only got to see him for 2-3 min before they transferred him. It was hard.

Next time, I hope to have a better outcome and definitely hoping for a VBAC. But we'll be going to a hospital with a top rated NICU so I won't have to wait so long to see my baby if anything does go wrong.

I normally cook with spices and seasonings...so I am thinking that one or more of these should go in this veggie stuff I make but I never (I make this maybe once a year) add any cause I'm not sure what should go in it.
Am I missing something?
I'm super unskilled at cooking. I cheat and use the McCormick Stew mix, & I cook my roast first in the oven w/ onions b/c I can't handle my food having fat or anything on it. So I cool it down and pick it apart, then toss the animal flesh w/ flour, potatoes & carrots in the pan (you know... the black roaster that EVERYONE has) w/ the seasoning packet & water, then cook it til the potatoes are almost done then toss in peas, corn, & green beans. Easy Peasy...

Ummmm, yeah! I got shut DOWN. Too much innuendo about <schvetty>? <moist?>
sauerkraut balls? I don't know. This will probably get removed too. Or I will get beaten with a Moderator Stick!:duc
It was like, I got a notification that one of my posts was edited (there was a dirty word in it, but I bleeped out one of the letters in the spirit of politeness and family-friendliness) and them, BAM!!! All of a sudden, my little thread was locked, the "reply" button disappeared, it apparently went through the sanitizing cycle, and then reappeared, all clean and shiny!

ETS: With nary a drop of moistness, or a sauerkraut ball to be found!
I got beat w/ the moderator stick too... I know for sure one of my posts was edited, the one about the duck anatomy.. I didn't get a notification though.

Please..... mom of the year... I got you beat... I was so tired and *off* yesterday, that kiddo had cheese balls and pb&j sammich for food... ALL DAY! I put your MOTY to shaaaame! :lau
I believe I am entitled to Mom of the Year... this was a few years ago though.. my younger one had just started ballet and was practicing at home. She slipped and hurt her arm. It was like 10pm (It was a Friday night.. we stay up late.. don't judge) & She said it didn't hurt bad and I told her if it still hurt we'd go to the er the next morning. So the next morning she wakes me up, we go to the er and yep, it's broken. Like REALLY broken. In my defense the er dr acted like we were wasting his time too b/c she didn't seem to be hurt that bad... until he saw the xrays. I'd like to say this was the first time or the last time that things like this have happened, but her sister dislocated her knee (again) and I made her wait a couple days before I called the ortho.. but in that case I was hopeful we might get to avoid pt this time & get through it w a knee brace. My kids get hurt a lot. Not 'call child services' a lot, but 'embarrassed to go to the er AGAIN' a lot.

I had tonsilitis so much, my tonsilectomy had be rescheduled over 10 times in a year since I would always get an infection right before the surgery (FUN FACT, I was in the middle of surgery when Reagan got shot!).
I got my tonsils out at 21! I didn't have a fever or any sickness, my tonsils were just massive. I was in surgery 4 hrs and they were so big they went down my throat once they touched in the middle. The Dr. sent them away to be studied. He had never seen tonsils so big with no sign of infection. LOL
It was not fun! They gave me liquid codeine that would come back as soon as a swallowed it. They had also used a laser to remove them so burnt meat was all I could taste. YUMMY:sick
I had tonsil stones for a while (didn't know what they were, just picked them off - how about that visual? - lol) Then I finally mentioned them to the dr and I ended up getting my tonsils out when I was 19. I'm kind of pissed that they gave you tylenol w/ codine. They gave me vicodin in pill form and that's when I found out that I was allergic to vicodin - Throwing up after you have your throat cut open is not fun. AND they didn't give me any other pain killers after that. I missed a week of work & thought I was going to die. Even when I went back to work I still wasn't completely better.
:lau:barnie:barnie
Probably! They are ruthless to each other tonight!!! As soon as I let one out of time out, they paired back up. Girl, I don’t know! I am too much of a control freak to see how this plays out.
HAMSTER CAGE. I put my jerkface chick in the ham cage. He eventually straightened out. Hmmm Are you sure yours are girls? Someone said the boys are usually the jerkfaces when they're that little, & mine was.

Can I enjoy the remainder of my 30's first? ;)
Ditto.. I'm 36, but tell people I'm 29.

Any of you guys that live up north when there is snow and it's cold out do you still range
It's not actually snowing here yet, but it's freezing cold here right now (was 26 degrees in the coop this am) and my girls were out in the run and trying to come out of the coop. I'm going to let them out this evening for a bit. Snow is coming soon though. The past few years it'll snow, then everything melts, then it snows again, repeat for 5 - 6 months. So hopefully I'll have periods where I can let them out to range in the grass. I'm worried about what's going to happen when there's actual snow on the ground.

I *think* the idea is that in most climates, there may be days when the hens can't or won't go outside. So they need enough indoor room. I personally also keep my feeders in my coop so there needs to be enough room at chow time too. Not a dumb question though! I had an itty bitty pre-fab coop I used to house bullies during integration. They seemed just fine in the small space  Now that they all live in the same coop though, I am grateful the "littles" have space to get away from the "bigs"
Ditto.. Also, I've read that if they are too cramped they'll start attacking each other. I'm not sure that mine do this, but other people who have said their birds are picking at each other a lot were told that their coop/ run were too small for the number of birds they had.

I just toss my eggshells in an aluminum lasagna pan (the throw away kind) and let them dry. I only rinse them if the egg breaks while I'm washing them. I find they don't crush as well if they're wet so if I'm going to feed them & there isn't time to let them dry I will toss the pan in the oven for a bit (which is why I use the pan rather than another container). Then I pour them into a baggie or a plastic container. I use the flat end of a meat tenderizer to crush them. I have a couple boys so I don't put the shells in their food anymore. I have seen Willie grab up some shell a few times so now I keep it separated so he doesn't die.

Hey! I'm 14, not thirteen. :p
You're the same age as my older daughter! She's in 9th grade now, & oh how much things have changed. Enjoy your childhood... it goes soooo fast even if it doesn't seem like it.

That is a scary situation indeed!
Just make sure you have a doc that is supportive about vbac. Sometimes they are lazy and don't want to let a woman try.

The pink soapy stuff might be hibiclens. If so it's super for killing germs.
