not necessarily ... we are putting our coop inside of our run but have raised the coop 20" off the ground so they can roam underneath the coop as well.
Just make sure you can reach anywhere the chickens can get to.
Speaking as a person who was only able to access floor eggs under the coop by sending in a child with a hoe.
We call it 'The Chicken Palace', lol. These are from when it was being built by the Hubs 5 years ago, it has enough room for 25 heavy breed chickens. You could have a walk in coop, just put an exterior door in one of the outside walls.
