Anyone have White Rocks?

I was talking on the phone with our chicken breeder a few days ago about getting a few hens to replace some of our older hens and he mentioned that he had some White Rock pullets. As we have no white chickens, the idea sounded appealing. Some research showed that the White Rock is part of the Plymouth Rock family and has the same basic body, size, temperament, and laying characteristics as Barred Rock, which we have plenty of and really like.

Does anyone have experience with White Rocks? Our breeder said that White Rocks have a leaning toward becoming broody, but our experience has shown that all hens may become broody once in a while. I would appreciate any input you may have about the White Rock breed.

Thanks,

Billy Clyde

I have 10 white rock pullets. They won't be a year old until July, so I have not noticed any broodiness, but they did start laying last month. They are wonderful chickens, in my opinion. Very friendly, and they get along with everyone.

These days, most of the broodiness has been bred out of hens in favor of egg production. I have 22 layers and in two years, only one has ever gone broody and raised chicks. I have RIRs, Buff Orpingtons, Silver Laced Wynadottes, Ameraucanas, Blue Orpingtons, Speckled Sussex, Barred Plymouth Rocks and a few crosses.

A third of my flock is White Rock. Some of the best natured roosters that you'll ever see with good egg production from hens. A good standard breed. Like anything else, all depends on what you like and what your looking for.
