Anyone here a Veterinarian or vet tech??? **UPDATE**

When I was working at an Emergency Vet I saw this a couple of times, but it was always from a cat getting caught in the dryer. Yes I said "DRYER". Poor kitties. They always recovered just fine.
I hope he is ok!!!

He was definately not in the dryer. He has one end of the house all to himself because the young cats are mean to him. We put a screen door in our hallway to protect him. He is not a very active cat.......he eats and sleeps because he is old. So it really was not something that happened to him like that. Because he is skinny and weak, he might fall trying to jump on the table the computer is on......but that is about the extent of the action in his life.

hes probably just got a busted blood vessel..he'll be fine i bet! that or he got into toooo much cat nip!...

So glad he does not seem uncomfortable. I've had cats that old or older. At that point I think their comfort is primary. I don't know why blood in they eye is not necessarily uncomfortable, but that has been my experience.

It could be that the thyroid condition has something to do with why this happened; I have no idea at all.

I just knew there were people on here that would let me know if it was something more.

Dawn......my mother found info to suggest the thyroid might have something to do with it too. My MIL has this happen to her eye before and she said it did not hurt at all. I think it just looks really bad, so it freaks me out. I'll see how it looks in the morning. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this with me

I didn't mean to say 14 is old, thats as close as i can guess his age to be. If you could see him in person you would see that health wise he is old. When we found him he was almost dead, so the vet did not expect him to live a wicked long life. All his teeth we abbsessed (sp) and he had to have all but 3 pulled. He was having a rough life til we found him. No matter what, he got 10 yrs he almost missed out on. But i am feeling good about this situation, and i think its going to be ok. I'll sleep better now, so i am glad i posted to ask about peoples input. Thanks again.......

I did a google and read a little, too. I also found thyroid could be involved; hyperthyroid was specifically mentioned; is yours hyperthyroid or hypothyroid? Evidently, hyperthyroid can be associated with detached retina in cats. It is possible it will result in blindness in that eye, so you might want to be prepared for this. Although, in your situation, it does not sound like it would alter his quality of life much.

At any rate, the bottom line is, my google search indicated there was no treatment available, and I found nothing to indicate pain might be present; probably not different from what your mother found. So, no emergency, and no pain.

I am a retired nurse. I never saw anyone with blood in the eye who found it uncomfortable, and I have seen quite a number of cases. Hopefully, cats are no more uncomfortable with it than people are.
