Anyone Here from Southern New Jersey?

Hi Breezy!! It's been a hectic few months for us! We had 6 Wyandottes until our doggie thought one was a squeaky toy.

However, we cannot be mad at our doggy as he only did what was natural for him. Soooo that means we only have 5 now. They are about 4.5 months old now and absolutely a lot of fun!! They are very social and love to roost on Al! I'm sorry to hear about your babies having coccidiosis, but am glad to hear that they seem to be doing better. Our once cute little guinea hens try to bully our chickens. Al says our guinea hens are an evil gang of thugs! I'm working on getting more photos up as our chicks are quite big now!

Do, please, tell us about your chickens!

I am in Camden County but go the Quinton Sportsmens Club (even though I am a girl.) We have 6 hens but only one is laying so in the Spring 4 are going to freezer camp to make room for new pullets. I will keep the young RIR and the broody Cochin.

My coop -

which is about to get an update because we roofed the run.

None yet -- I've been doing my research and learning a TON since Fall, and I posted a plan for the coop I want to build in Spring. Once I have a home I'm happy with, I'll be ordering some 3-5 Barnevelder hens. I decided on Barnies because of their cold tolerance, calm demeanor, and tolerance for captivity -- I won't be able to free range them for several months yet.

4 of my 6 hens are barnevelder (or crosses) and I love them. They have not needed heat in the coop and they were very good layers. At 5 years old they are slowing down. I do not put light in my coop. To me the time off in the winter is good for the hens. The hens are quite friendly and not skittish or flighty.

We do have a local breeder for barnevelders: http://www.dutchconnectionfarm.com/ (You can say you got the information from Diane if you contact her.)

I have gotten all of my pullets/chicks there with the exception of the RIR. Ms Emma Jean Hen "followed me home" from a horse farm I was visiting in Swedesboro!

Hi there! We don't have any chickens just yet, but we do live in South Jersey. We're in Woodland township.
We're planning to get chicks this spring.

And we have a big pile of scrap lumber which is going to magically turn itself into a coop, I guess.

I think the plan is about 6-8 hens, of 3 or 4 different breeds. They are going to be more "pets that lay eggs" than "serious egg producers." We don't have close neighbors and would not mind a rooster, too, if he behaved himself.

I'm in Manalapan. I have EE's, Golden Wyandottes, SBEL, Cream Legbar, Welsummers, and Leghorns. Hoping for Marans as my last one passed.

Hi Sharisse, Hi pinebarrens and Hi imeister! welcome!! I'm in New Egypt. Up until this past week we had Silver Laced Wyandottes & Guinea Hens. We just acquired 14 chicks of various breeds including: Americaunas, Silkies, Polish Crested, Jersey Giants, I think some Cubalayas and Rhode Islands. We started with 6 Guineas last year and are down to 5 and 6 Silver Laced Wayndottes and are down to 3 Wayndottes. Our Wayndottes are sweet, wonderful girls that enjoy foraging around us when we are gardening and they are out of their coop. Since one of them was snatched while out, we do not let them out without them being directly in our sight. We have chickens as pets and for therapy and spend hours doing what we call "watching chicken tv". My husband has severe ptsd from combat and the chickens and guineas have helped him immensely. Our Wyandottes do produce an egg a day on average and I am permanently spoiled as there are no eggs in the world better than those from my own Wayndottes! Worse yet, I just won't eat eggs anywhere else but from my chickens.

Hi!

I am in Camden County where I have 5 hens. The cochin has gone broody so yesterday we got her some fertile eggs from dutch connection farm, assembled the broody coop and fenced off a nursery area within the run. She is now happily sitting on 14 eggs (breda, welsummer and barnevelder.) Hatch day will be June 5th!!

I do have my coop build documented as Southern New Jersey Cluckiingham Palace.

cheers!
