I don't have to go bird watching, they come to me!! in the summer its harder because they have so much more they can eat, but I do have nests all over the place near the barn in the barn on the trees around my house and some in the bushes in front of my house. I don't even know the names of the birds but I have seen the tiniest little bright yellow bird to some spotted red and Jamaican blue, my hubby thinks they are types of finches, so adorable, we get loads of whiskey jacks and blue jays and the winter months are my favorite. During the warmer months where we have no snow I never fill my bird feeders because of bears and other animals, as soon as the snow begins to come down the feeders get filled to the top and then I sprinkle the food on the ground as well, that is when I get the bands of snow birds on the front of my house followed by the whiskey jacks and blue jays. they never fight they all take turns and then at the end of the day fly away. Wood peckers are awesome to watch!!
this year we've had several owls stop at the log tree house my hubby built for the kids to play in, many hawks and for the first time since moving here we've seen a chickadee, and a cardinal. Today I woke up and looked outside and found a peregrine falcon taking in his surroundings on the top of the log house. We built houses for the swallows last fall and the houses have been full. We have a few sterlings nesting near by and well my least favorite has to be the thousands of ravens we seem to have around here, but they eat the field mice and moles we have so they have to stay.
in the winter we move everything from the front of the dining room picture window and relocate it elsewhere until spring just so we can stand closer to the window and watch the birds, the kids just love it, they way they fly up in formation and then come right back down. not a whole lot to eat around here in winter so I am happy to keep the feeders full.
