Anyone impatiently waiting for your baby chicks to arrive?!?!

So sad to loose the babies, Miracle didn't make it and so far 3 more have died. I hope everyone else does okay. I'm hovering over them, checking to see if anyone isn't eating, drinking and pooping but it seems I can't stop the process. I can tell the ones doing poorly as their little crops are empty and they are just sleeping and not acting like chickens. Ug. I've never had problems like this, this is my third year ordering chickens and the first time I've lost ANY from shipment. I will wait another 24 hours to notify the hatchery as they have a 48 hour guarantee. At this point I've lost half my order with these chicks!!!! :(
I'm so sorry. I thought about Miracle today. Hugs!

I'm sorry, I wish they weren't so fragile.

I may be losing one of my 4 chicks, and I picked them up at a local feed store so no shipping involved...to me anyway, they did get shipped to the feed store. My kids are going to be heartbroken :(

My kiddos are a lot older now - some are adults.
I used to rehab wild birds and that was the sad way of introducing death to my kids. My youngest was 4 at the time and at first she cried every time a bird would die but honestly MOST don't make it. All we can do is try our best. :( like you said, "let's get a new one" is what they ask a lot.

omg the last apartment I lived at had a nest in the most weird place and baby birds just kept falling out of it! We tried feeding them and taking care of them but none of them survived! Its so hard to know what they need =(

I am! I ordered 25 chicks from McMurray Hatchery. Oh! and one exotic breed chick! :weee

4 Pearl White Leghorn pullets
1 Pearl White Leghorn Cockerel
9 Buff Orpington pullets
1 Buff Orpington cockerel
9 White Rock pullets
1 Dark Cornish cockerel
1 Exotic rare chick

After ordering I realized, they're all gonna look yellow as chicks! =D Well, except the dark cornish cockerel and the exotic one I guess...

If they all survive,
I'm planning on breeding my own version of meat chickens using the white rocks and dark cornish roo. I know, they're not gonna be as big, or even close to commercial birds, but I just wanted to have some fun with that. Buff orpingtons are also meant to be for meat, but that would be the next generation. Leg horns are for eggs. =)

Soooo, that's my plan! What's yours? and when are you going to buy more chicks? How many? from where? what breeds? why? =D

I'm awaiting 15 Americana pullets that r due to come in the morning. I've got everything ready for my girls and am super excited. I currently have 5 hens and 6 Roos. 4 of my Roos were supposed to b RIR pullets. They're pretty large and gonna make a good dinner soon :)

It probably was a starling. They nest in holes and stuff like that. If you ever have that happen you can give them wet cat food as a start, don't give them water by mouth but only drops on the beak and maybe the biggest thing is to keep them warm and let them rest for awhile before fooling with the eating part.

There are recipes on line if you googled "feeding a starling." Basically it's the same recipe for any song bird except a few changes would have to made for mocking birds because they need a specific diet. Birds are sooooo delicate. I love birds though.

My order of chicks are to be shipped on the 23rd. The suspense is killing me! I am worried about some not making it... We're splitting an order with someone who wanted the majority of chicks required to make the minimum and so only four will be ours. Two of the four are bantams, so I'm doubly worried about those in a shipment of LF chicks.

My kids already have their pet hens, so I'm going for the colorful egg basket here--one each of Crested Creme Legbar, Black Copper Maran, bantam Easter Egger, and bantam white crested black Polish (thought we needed one white egg layer to help show off the colors of the others).

I'm obsessing over them before they've even arrived. :)

Well, sorry - I won't be able to do that. I got so absolutely fed up that when I finally was able to get in touch with someone, I cancelled my order. Of course, their response only confirmed it was the right decision. Sigh. What to do now?

I ordered from efowl.com and they have been great. They r even running sales right now. Check them out, I get my chicks tomorrow morning
