I am no expert, but my Brahmas and the Buff Orphington are GREAT egg layers. 1 egg a day even in most winter months.. I have been having problems with them breaking the eggs this past month and from what I have heard on here... its one of the worst things that can happen and its very difficult to stop them.. I am going to try the mustard in the blown egg idea next. I just started with Silkies and they are the sweetest. I have 3 kids and the Silkies are by far the gentlest. Are you looking for more good egg layers?

Post exactly what you are looking for on here. Someone usually will tell you who has them. I usually only get hatching eggs, and thats what I notice sells more on here. Its hard to find someone within a decent driving distance. Are you looking to hatch or started hens? I know alot of people on here buy day old chicks from Ideal Hatchery. There prices are reasonable and "usually" they all arrive alive.

I am looking to freshen up my egg layers.I will take suggestion and i guess will take chicks or started hens.Do you have any advice?

The only advice I could give is... If I had to do it all over, I would go with Bantams over Standard size Hens.. The 3 hens I have are HUGE and they poop HUGE! The Bantams, I have separated and its so much easier to clean. I love the huge eggs from the Brahmas and the Orphington, but I have a small coop and its high maintenence with the big girls. The Bantams lay a smaller egg, but same quality. Look over pics people have on here to be sure what you are looking for. I like the Easter Eggers, so many colors and they lay alot of different colored eggs. Its what YOU like the best. You need to find people closest to you as far as picking up some birds. Otherwise, I would just order from Ideal or Mc Murray hatcheries. My Pet Chicken allows you to only buy as little as 3, but they charge more for shipping because they have to send heat packs with the chicks and I had to wait over a month to get them. But they sex them too, so you can order only girls. Hope any of this helps, I wish I did more research before jumping into this myself.
