anyone in the Altadena, CA area?

@bigluelok Hi, I am also in Altadena and I haven't looked into this but I know many folks here have chickens without issue. I think you're safe with at least 4 hens (which is what I believe is allowed in L.A. city limits). We may even be able to have more here but I'm not positive. We will be getting 4 hens soon as our house. Roosters would be another question altogether, though. Not sure if you are considering getting one of those.

This is what I found-
County zoning laws require any structure, including chicken coops to be located at least 5’ from the rear yard lot line, 5’ from either side yard lot line, and 6’ from the primary structure. If the structure exceeds 120 sq. ft. it will require a building permit. This is in addition to the 35 feet from any residence required by the Health Department.

Hi again @MarilynB ! We finally have our coop and chickens! We ended up getting 2 Olive Eggers (about 10 wks now) and 2 Buff Orpingtons (around 8 wks). I could not be happier - they are already such a joy and we're only on day 3! How is your flock doing?

I hope that all the "Altadena" flocks are well! I've been giving my girls frozen watermelon every day with this crazy heat wave we're having!

Frozen watermelon sounds delish! Luckily, the area where our coop and free roaming area is located is quite shady (two elm trees and side of house) and stays fairly cool. Our hens favorite treat is sliced bananas and yogurt, but I'm going to try the watermelon. The heat has brought lots of small flies (not in the coop but between the trees). I'm using traps now.

Our flock consists of a cinnamon queen (1 yr old) and two rescue hens (leghorns-2 yrs old). We get 2 eggs every morning pretty consistently (1 brown, 1 white).

Let us know if you'd like to get together and check out our chicken set-ups.
