Anyone in WV???

Thanks! I am moving sometime in the next couple of months, so the coop will be a project at the new house. I plan to have done by early Fall so I can put hens in it before it gets very cold. tbiM20, what part of Charleston are you in? I'm in the East End.

Oh, good luck with the move! Plan to do the same in a few years, currently we're living with and helping out SO's parents on the West Side. On Watts hill, mind, no craziness up here!

if you are going to buy started birds, I would recommend you buy the whole flock at once - adding birds later can be a challenge, and it can cause illness in the flock.

Hi there!  I live in Charleston and am new to chickens but am thinking about taking advantage of the new law that lets me have up to six hens in my backyard.  I have a coop design picked out and plan to build it with a friend's help.  I'm starting to research chicken breeds, but haven't made any decisions yet.  I'm not sure what is available locally, and I'm not interested in buying hatching eggs because I can't keep roosters.
I just picked up some Black Copper Marans from a lady in Tornado tonight. She has a page, Happy Hens 10,on Facebook. She doesn't update it a lot, as she sells most of what she has by word of mouth. She also has some white Plymouth Rocks available now and raises Barred Rocks and I think Delawares. I can't remember all of them.
Area Tractor Supply stores are hosting farm swaps on Saturdays. I got most of my birds at one of these and the Mason County Farm and Garden Swap (see page on fb). Mason County is having one tomorrow at the Apple Grove VFD and next one at Teays Valley Tractor Supply should be August 2nd. Other locations are different weekends.
You may still inadvertently wind up with a cockerel you'll need to rehome. Be prepared for that. We have a late bloomer here that just started crowing this week. Lol
Congrats and good luck!
