Anyone in WV???

We have a bunch of chicken folk here in Charleston. I love the flea market. There's an auction right past flea market on Friday nights. The capital farmers mkt is nice but has gotten expensive. I started up the west side farmers mkt, but it failed. I thought about hatching a bunch of chicks and selling them at flea mkt before Easter, but afraid they wouldn't all go to good homes. People let their kids torture baby animals. Used to be able to buy dyed chicks for Easter. Most died miserably I'm sure
around here you can still get chicks that are colored for easter. We waited and bought our son two orange ones that were reduced in price because they were no longer "cute" they are very good laying hens now. It is sad that people get them though with no regards to their lives. My son is very protective over his chickens, he is a rough little boy but when it comes to chickens forget it he is a total control freak. He is only 4 and has decided to cancel his next birthday party because at the previous one he caught three kids trying to feed his chickens chocolate. He told me we could have it somewhere like the movies or chucky cheese but no house parties because other kids are "mean". He gets so excited watching eggs hatched and even helped me bandage one that had crooked toes. he can even explain what a pip is and what zipping means. He also helps tote oyster shells and anything else he can carry outside to his hens. We had to buy him a "real" shovel, hoe, and rake so he could help me clean out the coop.

I'll tell you what, it does my soul good to hear of a child being raised right. You have obviously done well with him. You should be very very proud! If we ever do any business, that boy is going to get his very own chick or eggs from Uncle Daddy Roo. Grin. He sounds like a great little man.
The colored chicks...the ones that survived...were good chickens. My brother, sister and I got a blue, green and pink one back in the early 70's. They were good layers.

thank you I try but you know how kids are and every parent has a few mistakes. my son tends to speak like an adult and doesn't really play with kids his own age. (only child and all my cousins' kids are mostly 7 and up)He is a very stubborn child and very sure of himself but generous and kind for sure. He has no issue charging my husbands coworkers or our produce man for his eggs but he wants to give them to his mawmaw and great-grandmother for free. They have tried to talk to him about it but he just walks off when they get started lol. He will even let his pawpaw buy them but not mawmaw. Every once in a while he will find a really special egg (huge or really colorful) and he says that it has to be for his mawmaw. It really makes me proud. He even saves the money, hardly ever spends it and 9 times out of 10 when he does it's a holiday and he buys everyone coffee mugs as gifts. lol

I had silkies I bought from my pet chicken, but they disappeared from my garage. Nothing left. Not even a feather. All at once! What is wry neck?

That's horrible!!! I hate losing babies :( I might be willing to part with one when it's older if you'd be interested :)
It's either a vitamin defiency the parents have or somewhere in the process of being incubated it happens I guess, I've heard two different things. I'm giving him poly sol without iron three times a day. Little sob wants nothing to do with it and we end up with more on each other than in his mouth

Interesting! I'm way too scared to buy grown up birds now. I have had HORRIBLE luck between getting sick birds and having to medicate and mites, I am really scared about buying grown ones now.

Omg that's horrible!! Do they stay dyed their entire lives?

That is so sweet!!! I was nuts about my mamaw too. He's gonna take care of you in your golden years, watch and see. Post pics of him and his chickens.

You need to part with one at my house! Lol! What colors are they? I loved my silkies. Ordered straight run from my pet chicken...but hatched out a clutch with one of the broodies. Talk about a happy day! Those chicks made my day! I had one splash, and he was my favorite. So pretty. I had a black roo that was just plain evil. My washer/dryer are in my garage and he would flog me when I turned my head. Had to fight with the booger with a broom! He was fearless! Little turd bird. Imagine going to garage to feed them, and they are gone. In thin air. Just disappeared. My garage is the ground floor of my house and I have a garage door opener (can't be opened manually) and I have a burglar alarm. Ya know...my BCM's are down there now. Yikes! Hadn't thought about that! Ugh. At $10.00 each for day old chicks, I best get their outside coup fixed asap! These are your future BCM's parents too! Lol.
The dye was only on their fuzzy down. They always feathered out white. They were cute but many suffered no doubt.

I want to hatch out some olive eggers in late summer...if anyones interested in a few. My question...should I cross my BCM's roo with my ameracaunas hens, or my ameracauna roo with a couple of my BCM's pullets? I don't think it matters, but id love to hear my chicken friends ideas about it. Wvchickduck, you have a lot of experience with chickens, what you think I should do? I think dark olive eggs are beautiful, and will look awesome with my ameracaunas, BCM, barred rock and RIR eggs. Green eggs and ham anyone? Lol.

Oh oh...one more thing. I live close to Greens feed n seed, and on March 22, their day old chicks are coming in. They will have some Welsummer chicks this year. They often sell out early. I'm going to be there around 8am to buy a few. If any of my chicken friends want some, I'll pick them up for you and then you can pick them up whenever its convenient for you. Even a week or so is fine. Just let me know. They have a list of the other breeds on their facebook page...in case anyone wants other breeds. This is where I bought my ameracaunas last year, and they will have them again this year. I'm a sweet old man! Lol.

Oops...I was wrong...they won't have ameracaunas. Sorry.
