Anyone keep Giant Schnauzers?

I love seeing all the people here who have giants!!

My experience with them (and what I've been told by people I know who've had them) is that they are either amazing, wonderful dogs or a nightmare. The ones that are from good places and have good health and temperament are great. They are more serious working type temperament than the minis, but thats correct so if that appeals to you, go for it. BUT, the ones that are from unscrupulous breeders (and sadly some of the big show breeders are offenders in this breed) have serious health and temperament problems. The biggest behavior issue is fear aggression. I mean so scared they will eat you alive! For this reason, this is not a breed I would have shipped in, I would insist on meeting the dog, and if it's a puppy, at least the mother.
I do like the breed, but I'd say they are more like a doberman in a schnauzer coat.

You are right, they are more consistent with dobies and german shepards...they are big working dogs and should be thought of as such, not large minis.

Has anyone had problems with toe nails with Giant schnauzers? I have 2 and they are the best dogs! Yes, they are energetic, loyal, a protector but very lovable. They both have toe nails that stick straight up, as well as one that came off when doctor" flicked It" when being assessed under anesthesia. He then got a split toe nail that was removed twice , and then top part of his toe had to be removed. He still is not healing ! His bother had an infection at the base of toe, and again toe nail was able to be pulled out at doctor.....Again not healing! Any thoughts?

Are your two Schnauzers related? If so it sounds like a genetic issue, but I suppose it could be diet related. Definitely get another vet's opinion. https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/immune/lupoid-onychodystrophy-dogs
