Anyone know how to breed Buff Barred?

RAREROO wrote: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too, That Red barred roo that I hatched did have some black in it too, I am wanting Buff barred with no black in it.

RIR X barred rock female; select barred male offspring breed to red females.
Swap red for buff....
This is one I made earlier.

Don't know about the barred, but you could work with Gold Laced Wyandotte and Buff Orpington to make Buff Laced...

Wouldn't work.....ideally you'd need gold laced & dominant white but some people use splash.

Sorry I see you mean buff laced orps.....not buff laced wyandottes. Completely different colours but same name in different breds.

Krys, you are my hero, thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

Will the hens be the same color as that roo? and will all the chicks be that color?

Will this work the same way if I use a roo from a Buff roo X barred hen, this still makes sexlinks and I already have a few young roos from this cross. Can I breed one of them with a buff hen and get the Buff barred like is in the pic.

Also, after I get the Buff barred, will it breed true?

Thanks again

The colour will be the same in hens but often the barring does not show as well in females.

It takes a few generations of selection to get rid of smut, select away from silver, get the colour of leg the way you want it & get back to proper Orp type, if you're wanting Orp, or rock type, if you're wanting buff barred rocks. But, yes, from that cross you will start to see buff barred birds, though they will need work.

Also, after I get the Buff barred, will it breed true?

Actually, the male in that picture only has one barring gene. So only half of his female offspring would be barred. Once you have buff barred males with two barring genes & buff barred females then they will breed true. I have been concentrating more on type & getting rid of smut, than on whether the males have two barring genes.

So how do I know if they have one gene or two? and I do I breed to make them have two? If only half of the offspring from the one gene roo are barred, is the other half solid buff or what and can you tell the buff barred and the buff chicks apart when hatched? Do you have anymore pics of hens, chicks, or the roo?

don't they already made an autosexing breed called rhodebar?

Yes, but I don't think they are widely known in US.
Shame really as they'd be very useful & practical for the many people who want to be able to have birds which are sexable at hatch & that breed true.

In the same way one can tell with barred rocks the males look lighter. The bars are thinner, giving them a lighter appearance.

It is only half of the pullet offspring which would be non barred buff when the male only has one barring gene. The males all have either one barring gene or two barring genes. Presuming both parents were buff barred.

and can you tell the buff barred and the buff chicks apart when hatched

Sometmes one can at hatch other times it is not so obvious due to the headspot not showing up terribly well on buff chicks. It is noticeable once they start to feather up.

Don't want to bore people too much. I'm not a good photographer & I have few pics. I'll PM them. K?

Oh no please please post the pictures!! I would LOVE to see them and you are not boring any one at all. I have been following the thread trying to learn more! I think that rooster you posted is awesome.
