Sunny, I agree! I just now got to the perfect place to have a money making flock these past few years. While I lived in town, I still made money on the venture, but then, I was frugal-thinking even then. This place I'm renting now is ideal for the purpose!
Some would call it a hobby when you only make a profit of around $800 a year, as this doesn't mean much to many people. But $800 is a lot of money to someone like me~ a single mother with 3 kids.
Its always nice if you can have a hobby that still makes you money. That way, you don't have to sacrifice it when times get tough.
All around me are commercial growers and very few backyard chicken owners, as the commercial guys are the model of success in the poultry world~at least to the locals in my area.
I am often asked how in the world I can afford to keep my chickens and still break even on feed. I don't actually tell them I make a profit or my little corner on the fresh, free-range egg business here might be affected by competition!
