Which is pretty much a pointless tautology - "it is because it is" and why trying to discuss science and religion in the same sentence doesn't work.

Pitting one against the other is equally pointless - science is not my "religion" it's what I do for a living.

Here here!!! Well said!
This whole line of questioning is irrelevent. I don't feel any need to defend my beliefs (or lack thereof) to anyone. I support everyone's right to belief whatever they want! Why does anyone feel compelled to engage us in a pointless debate, especially on this particular thread?

YES! And this is why I love you all! I agree with Orpington Manor you folks are great! The mods have been awesome (and very quick) about keeping this thread more than civil. I've missed most all of the inflammatory comments from those trying to "convert us" due to the fantastic jobs the mods have been doing!

Steffanie I enjoyed meeting you yesterday! I am so impressed by the work you do, that's just awesome! Looking forward to spending a little more time chatting next time when our schedules aren't so tight.

I haven't been back to this thread lately, was watching it..well..religiously (haha) for a while, but got busy and have been away. But I was anxious to come and see what new thoughts had been added, and kind of scared that maybe someone had gotten out of hand and we were locked down. But I shouldn't have worried, lots of good new ideas have been discussed, and all with complete reason and rationale. So many of you have helped me to define my feeling, just need to say thank you to all for being so articulate when I am not.

My hubby just retired from the military. There are a lot of soliders of many different faiths who serve our country. So, this story has saddened me.

http://www.examiner.com/x-4459-NY-M...p-misconceptions?cid=exrss-NY-Muslim-Examiner

we have many Muslims that live in this country. But true Islam cannot be practiced in this country. You can't beat your wife. You cannot murder your children if you think they've committed adultery or something like that, which they do practice in these other countries…I don't agree with the teachings of Islam and I find it to be a very violent religion.”

We're not attacking Islam but Islam has attacked us. The God of Islam is not the same God. He's not the son of God of the Christian or Judeo-Christian faith. It's a different God, and I believe it is a very evil and wicked religion."

The folk on Fox News this morning were upset because Frank Graham-the man who made these statements was not going to be allowed to speak at the Pentagon. I think that the pastor is now going to speak.

Substitute any other group for Muslim and tell me that people wouldn't be up in arms over his speech.

It's sad for a number of reasons. Islam is an Abrahamic also, out of the same tradition as Christianity and Judaism. It is sad that someone so influential would say such things. It wasn't Islam that attacked the US anymore than it was Christianity that attacked the federal building in Oklahoma City. Evil done in the name of religion is still evil.

His remarks about Islam are extremely defamatory. They are also ignorant.

I "lurk" here a lot. I have read all 108 pages. What I have learned mostly is that I am really not alone in my belief or lack thereof. I have decided that I don't have to decide if I believe in God/Jesus/Religion...I just like to read what others have decided. Unfortunately that is not a popular stance in my neighborhood/city/work or much of anyplace around here. It's my opinion that people that have a firm belief (religion) find me, in some way weak. Those same people feel it is necessary to "help" me decide. Just because I remain undecided does not mean that I do not have strong feelings about morality and right and wrong, doesn't mean that I don't care for my fellow man and animal and respect life whether it be plant, animal, or human. I have found, if the topic of "religion" does not come up in a conversation I can find something in common with 99.9% of people I meet, but mention religion and I become an alien! I guess that is why I like this thread, NO JUDGMENT!

Mary, I think that it can be difficult to be nonreligious in the south. Religion seems to permeate southern culture. That isn't necessarily bad. But it does mean that people often expect that only someone who is immoral or angry will be nonreligious. They simply can't understand that anyone won't accept what seems so obvious to them.
