Anyone order from Ideal Hatchery?

Ordered 25 banties and 25 mixed large fowl, and going through that blizzard that hit the middle of the country last week, we called several times to be certain the birds would be protected from the cold. We were assured they would be, with many promises.

Nothing was done except some tape over some of the holes on the box. 8 DOA when they got here Friday, lost another 12 over the next 24 hours, and several don't look good, which is pretty much a done deal, looking as they do.

We have done everything for them, including getting them into a warm car, with towels over it to carry it to the car and house, fabulous brooder set-up, vitamins and electrolyte water with a bit of sugar (just a tad to start), and the best food possible.

I'm rather irritated, because lives didn't have to be lost. They took a plane, for Pete's sake, and arrived in hours. They ought to have had supplemental heat, especially since we tried so hard to ascertain that they would be cared for. A $19 refund isn't really satisfactory, because it's really disgusting to just toss little lives aside so casually...those 12-hour heat pads are cheaper than $19 and they could've saved those birds and kept the difference in profit.

I'm going to avoid them from this point.

awwww - I'm sorry you lost so many little chicks. You never know - they might have been left in the mail truck while the postal person went to lunch and they could have been exposed to really low temps. I'm glad mine won't be shipped until March, and hopefully there won't be a late winter storm passing through. I will be at the P.O. at 6:00 a.m. to pick them up. I only ordered from Ideal one time before and their chicks were beautiful and healthy and matured to be beautiful birds. One of the little chicks had a retarded toe - it was 2 toes in one, and curved to the side, but she's a good layer. I occasionally have to bring her in and clean and put antibiotics on her toes, as she yanks her one large toenail as she's scratching and ends up hurting herself. A couple of nights inside and she's good as new. My experience with them was very good, so I ordered from them again. I do understand how upset you are to lose those chicks...heartbreaking

, and I hope it doesn't happen too often during cold-weather shipping.

Sorry for your loss.... that's not really what I wanted to hear. It would really disappoint me to see a bunch of dead ducks in the boxes this week. Temps are supposed to rise and it's supposed to be in the high 30's by the time they should be in transit. Shouldn't get cold until they hit the airport in Cleveland.

I just picked up my 20 Pekin ducks at the PO. They are all healthy and loud.

Well I just got them settled in their brooder, and there were only 16 instead of 20.

But they promptly refunded my money.

Yeah!!!! My chicks should be here tomorrow. We are ready and waiting! Ordered some Cochins for the first time. Hope they are nice and produce pretty good. I have read they can go broody and that isn't horrible either. Then we also have 15 surprise pullets coming. Oh boy. I am sure I will be posting pics to see if anyone can guess what they are.

I'm sorry about your chicks, but that is the risk a person takes when they order this time of year.....I'm not a fan of hatcheries, but the outcome could have very well been the same no matter where they came from. If hatcheries would quit selling this time of year and people stopped ordering now and waited till the weather becomes a bit warmer all this could be avoided.
