I have NO IDEA how to sex them.
They're like dogs--males have an penis underneath, females have a vulva in the back underneath the anus.

I kinda figured there would be a penis if it were male....but I've never seen a ferret penis. I just have gotten good at telling the rabbits apart. They look so similar, it's hard to tell.

Ferrets....I do love them so. They are unlike any other pet I've ever had. Swiper loves to get into everything, especially potted plants, they are so fun to dig in and destroy.

She steals food; like oatmeal cream pies, sleeves of crackers, gum, dog treats, you name it. Ours is let out of her cage every day to roam the house. If we forget to put her up at night, she wakes us up at 3 am licking our eyelids, and ears.

We constantly have to check the dishwasher and dryer for Swiper before we run them. She loves to play with our feet after we take a shower. Ferrets play rough, and those teeth hurt!

Swiper is very food-oriented. She always tries to get our food when we're eating, and can get herself on the kitchen table if there is something she wants.

She has destroyed mattresses, and filled the broiler drawer on our stove with bedding. She gets into drawers, which isn't bad if it's the underwear drawer, but it is when it's your spatula/measure cup drawer.

I've heard of them killing guinea pigs and parakeets, so keep them away from smaller pets. Swiper loves to play with our dog, fortunately, the feeling is mutual.

They are a mess, but a lot of fun. Enjoy your new ferret!

I have 3 ferret kids. We got our first one from my ex (My kids' father) after his girlfriend decided she didn't like the smelly birthday present she had bought for him and put the cage out on the back deck, in the sun, when the Chicago temperatures were soaring to 105. Scotty the ferret was near dead. My ex called me and begged me to take him. He knows I'm an animal lover and a sucker for animals in need, so of course I took Scotty. I nursed him back from a near fatal heat stroke and fell in love. He was my first ferret and he is the best ferret on Earth, of course I'm a little bias (he! he!). About 6 months or so after bringing Scotty home I happened to be in a shelter turning in a dog that someone had abandoned at the home of an elderly gentleman I used to do housework for and while I was in there turning the dog in, a lady came and dropped off her two ferrets saying she had no time for them and that they were biting her kids. Well, curious, I went to investigate them and I picked up the male and for as aggressive as he was suppose to be, he reached out and licked my chin. He immediately stole my heart. The little girl was a wisp of a thing, and absolutely terrified. I adopted both of them that day. Once they were home and their true colors began to show, I only felt sorrier for them. Bandit and Tinkerbell were their names, and they did know them, so I kept their names. It was immediately apparent that they had been abused in their previous home, and locked up at all times. I worked with them every day and I was bitten a lot, but in the end they saw the light. Bandit is now a lover. If you hold him up he will give you kisses until his little tongue wears out. He's the linebacker of the three, I mean he's BIG, but still not as big as some ferrets I've seen. Scotty has the overall best personality of them all, but then again he didn't suffer the abuse that the other two had. Tinkerbell took the longest to come around. She still shakes when you pick her up, and we learned the hard way to NEVER let her sneak up our pant legs. She is very shy and wary of strangers. She has to stay with one of her "brothers" at all times. She panics if she's away from them. Both boys take wonderful care of her. Outside of their cage (and they have a tall luxury cage that they LOVE) they are hams. Scotty loves to sneak up on us from behind and jump on us. He also has an obsession with barbies. He likes to steal the kids dolls and drag them under a dresser in one of the bedrooms. It's funny because he knows that we know where his secret stash is, and he gets excited when we come to check and make sure he didn't take anything important like keys. Bandit is more into finding things he can destroy and chewing them into oblivion. Tink is a hider. She will find a place to hide and it can take a LONG time to find out where she hid. She is the smallest ferret I have ever seen too. She barely weights a pound. She eats as well as the boys do, she just maintains that perfect feminine figure, lol. Scotty did give us a scare once a couple of years back too. As much as I watched him and tried to keep anything he could ingest out of his reach, he did find a small piece of styrafoam from a long gone package and he ate it, and we had him in to the ER and spend $350 only for him to poop it out.

It only made us watch him even more closely. I used to put his harness and leash on him and walk him the 6 blocks to my kids old school to pick them up in nice weather. And he would walk a good 4 to 5 blocks before stopping and demanding to be carried the rest of the way. And the kids at the school always loved seeing him. He is so gentle and good with people. He has never bitten anyone, ever. He's my baby. I love ferrets, and while they are stinky, they are so smart and worth the added hassle. I don't know if in the future I will have them again as they are the most expensive pet I've ever had. As they grow older I know the vet bills will begin to pile up, but I love my fuzzbutts. I wish you years of happiness with your new ferret kids. Good luck and God Bless.
