Anyone planning next year's purchases yet?

I have decided it is way too hot to do any more babies this year....my brooder is in my garage which gets hotter than outside, even with fans running.

Now that I have a little "experience" I am already plotting and planning next year's hatchery shipments. For one, I am going to order early so I can actually get what I want....and two, I am going to ship in March so I can get them in and out of the brooder before they "cook". This year I bought all from feed stores and TSC. Next year I am ordering sexed pullets direct from hatchery so I know what I am getting......

Anyone else planning next year already? Any idea how early you can order from the hatchery for a later shipment? Not now obviously, but January maybe?

Yes, I am planning or ordering with Ideal Poultry. I am going to plan in so that the chicks turn 20 weeks when Spring starts. Good results for me from Ideal.

*raises hand* October, so that in spring they're ready to lay. Here oct is still 80-90 degrees so that gives them time to feather out before Jan when it gets down to the 60's.

Now on breeds, oh it's like buying lipstick, can't seem to pick 1-3 kinds.

I am thinking 2 each of......all the breeds I have ever wanted, ha ha ha. I didn't even think about ordering them this fall to be ready to lay in spring. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....


I really want some more jersey giants, brahmas.....wyandottes, different leghorns....

I am!! For my first flock. Of course, I have a 'dream flock' picked out but I don't think it will be possible given my resources. More realistically, I hope to end up with good tempered hatchery Delawares and maybe some breeder wheaten amerucanas.

Me too. Already have my geese ordered for next year. I'll be ordering what I want in October, I think. That way, they'll be laying in the spring.
